For many years, I was a professor of Classics (Latin, Ancient Greek, ancient literature in translation, ancient history) at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. My PhD is from Columbia University.

I am now retired, but eager to share my knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for these subjects.

I am also one of the few academics who enjoys reading and commenting on essays. Even when a full professor, I was the member of our department who advised our students how to write grammatically and coherently. And so I am also interested in tutoring English reading and writing skills (including SAT and ACT preparation).

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

For nearly four decades, I taught courses on ancient Greek and Roman art, during which I often pointed out similarities and contrasts with the art of other countries and times.

Classics

As a professor, I taught elementary and advanced courses in the ancient Greek and Latin languages, ancient Greek and Roman literature in translation, and ancient history. My specialties, on which I wrote a book and many articles, are the ancient epic (the Iliad, Odyssey and Aeneid) and Greek tragedy.

Greek

I am eager to tutor beginners or more advanced students in Ancient Greek. I have a PhD in Classics from Columbia University. From 1974 through 2000, I was a professor of Classics at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. I taught courses at all levels of ancient Greek. Classics journals have published many articles that I wrote on aspects of ancient Greek literature.

Latin

I am eager to tutor both beginners and advanced Latin students.
