I have a BA in English and Latin from New York University, an MA in English and Remedial Education from Columbia University and a New York State and New York City teaching license. For over three decades, I have been teaching and tutoring students of all ages and all levels of English competence, including non-English speakers.
My specialties are English as a second language; reading fluency, speed, comprehension; and vocabulary.
In addition, unlike many tutors, I also teach my students how to write clear, concise, coherent sentences, paragraphs and essays. I have found over the years that inadequate writing skills are often just as much an obstacle to academic success as poor reading skills. I have also always included study and organizational skills, since my goal is for my students to become independent learners.
For the past five years, I have been using of interactive computer programs that give practice in the skills I teach. These programs have significantly added to my ability to monitor and pinpoint progress. The lessons are rigorous, intense and enjoyable.
