With over 15 years of experience in education, I have a wealth of knowledge and expertise. I have taught students of all ages and abilities, from pre-school through adult. My passion for teaching comes through when I work with a student. I encourage students to try their best and give them the support they need to learn new material. My goal is to foster independence and a love of learning. I also work with parents to help them with all kinds of educational issues and help their children succeed. I welcome adult learners who are going back to school or looking to improve their academic skills to advance their careers and confidence. Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored, administered assessments and developed individualized curriculum for K-6 students in all areas at Sylvan Learning Center and independently since 1998. I am extremely proficient in all aspects of reading (phonics, word analysis, vocabulary and comprehension), math (basic facts, computation, concepts and application) and writing (grammar, sentence structure and composition).

Phonics

I have been teaching phonics as part of helping students learn to read for over 14 years. In teaching phonics, I include phonemic awareness, letter/sound correspondence, vowel rules, blends, digraphs, blending and syllabication. I believe that phonics is an essential part of teaching students how to read and giving them an essential foundation in good reading skills.

Study Skills

I have taught and written curriculum pertaining to study skills to students for over 14 years. I am well-versed in all aspects of study skills, such as time management, organization, study strategies, goal-setting,and test-taking. I can assess a student's needs and individualize strategies that fit the student's learning style.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with many ADD/ADHD students in my 15 year teching/tutoring career. Students with attention issues need assistance with establishing routines, breaking assignments down into simpler tasks and reducing stimuli. Occasionally, students with attention deficit have also fallen behind with academic knowledge, which exacerbates the problem.
