I love teaching. The joy when a student understands, when a student "gets it", is like no other joy on earth for a teacher. I teach English, reading, creative writing, vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, k-6, test taking, study skills. I work well with either children or adults (and everything in between).

I teach gifted students and those who have various challenges including dyslexic students, those with ADHD and other learning problems and everyone in between.

Okay, so I'm not exactly a young spring chicken. I have more than 40 years experience teaching. However, I am fresh and new in my ideas, but not so avant garde as to make students uncomfortable. I LOVE teaching. I make learning fun and most important, I keep students engaged, enthusiastic, and motivated. I teach both adults and children and in case you haven't figured it out yet, I love, absolutely LOVE teaching. To me, teaching isn't a job -- it's a privilege. I believe that teaching isn't just a profession, it's an art form. My students tell me that when I work with them, the passion. the pleasure, the absolute joy that I feel for teaching is obvious.

In addition to tutoring both children and adults, I also have been a musician for most of my life. One of my degrees is in music education and performance and I therefore also teach piano, and subjects related to music.

I hold a bachelor's degree from Florida International University (with highest honors) and have completed all the class work from University of Miami for a Master's degree with distinction. I lecture extensively in and around Miami about my views on teaching and learning which the media has called controversial and revolutionary. I have written 6 literary works (5 of which have been published by Warner Brothers). These are the Husky Gang Teaches... series and includes both stories, CD's with songs and teaching. My sixth book, Practicing Sucks, But It Doesn't Have To! was published by Rowman and Littlefield. Practicing Sucks, in a lighthearted, fun manner, offers hundreds of tips, ideas and suggestions about how to learn music 2 to 4 times faster, with greater success, less frustration and a whole lot more enjoyment.

I believe that EVERYONE can learn easier, faster, better and accomplish more in less time if they know the tricks about how to learn. I help them do that. I am gentle, patient, demanding but never demeaning, dependable and very prompt.

Grammar

Knowing how to speak and write grammatically correct is very important. First of all, it helps folks understand what you are trying to say. Even more important, it demonstrates what you know and where your weaknesses are. It is as important as knowing how to dress for a particular occasion. I teach all phases of the English language, reading writing, speaking, grammar and vocabulary to students from who are American born and students who are from other lands.

Reading

Music Theory

Music theory is the "grammar" of music. It answers the "why, what and how" music is written. In addition to being a professional pianist, harsichordist and organist, I am also a composer. In college I studied music theory (which in Europe is referred to as solfejo, or solfeggio). Musicians MUST know theory to be well rounded, and composers use theory the way people who speak a language use Grammar.

Writing

In addition to being a tutor, I am a professional writer with 6 books published by major publishers. I have also written many articles for magazines and newspapers. I have even written one for a medical journal. I can make words dance and sing on paper. And what's more important, I can help my students understand how to use words most effectively.

Proofreading

As a professional writer, I am also a proofreader. One of the secrets I have discovered as a professional writer is -- leave a little space between your writing and your looking over the material you wrote. Always look at what you have written with a "fresh eye." In that way, you will pick up errors that you may not have noticed when you originally wrote the piece. Be very careful of commas and other punctuation. Look over what has been written more than once.

Composition (Music)

I have all coursework completed for a Master's Degree in music composition from University of Miami (with distinction). I have composed many compositions for piano, small ensembles and full orchestra as well as solo and duet works for various instruments. I have also composed many vocal works. Ear Training

I incorporate ear training into all my lessons. Students learn the difference in pitch and rhythm by doing exercises for each lesson.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been teaching pre-kindergarten through 6th grade math, spelling, English, Language Arts, for more than 30 years. One of my degrees is in elementary education (FIU- Bachelor's).

General Music

I have a Bachelor's degree in music and have completed all my subjects for a master's degree in music.

Music History

I believe that every student who learns to play an instrument or sing should learn something about when, where, and why the music was written as well as something about composer who wrote it. I incorporate a soupcon of music history whenever I can into the lessons. Learning about what the composer was thinking, feeling or going through helps "humanize" that composer, and makes his/her music and lifestyle more accessible and understandable. I teach and have taught Phonics very successfully to students who are very young, adults, seniors, folks who are learning English as a second language (or third) for more than 30 years. I even taught Phonics BEFORE it was being taught in the public schools system. I have taught phonics to students in classroom settings and privately very successfully.

Piano

I have been teaching piano to children and adults for the better part of my life, more than 45 years. Being a pianist is not just what I DO, it's who I am. I love music! I love teaching, and particularly I love teaching piano to students who want to learn.
