I am an experienced, mature teacher and tutor with with over 20 years of experience and a master's degree in TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages - from Florida International University. I teach in the ESL Department at Miami-Dade College. I am thoroughly familiar with standardized tests and have taught SAT preparation class at Barry University and Nova Southeastern University. I have taught adults and adolescents in ESL (conversation, reading, writing, grammar), TOEFL, mathematics (arithmetic, algebra 1, basic geometry) English (reading, writing and grammar), FCAT, GED, PSAT/SAT, GRE, ACT, CPT, SSAT/ISEE preparation. I have traveled extensively and am comfortable with students from all backgrounds and cultures. I am bilingual (English/Spanish).

I practice a relaxed-but-focused style of learning and believe in obtaining and reacting to constant feedback from students as to what the student understands and needs to know to be proficient in each subject. I believe in the maxim that in order to master something a student should watch or listen first, practice to be able to perform, and then be able to explain the material to someone else. Learning by active involvement is key. I often like to use music to aid in learning process, especially in ESL.

Basketball

My interest and proficiency in basketball has been lifelong. Since elementary school, I have played on a regular basis. In high school and college, I played competitively. In my junior and senior years of high school, I was the leading scorer on teams which won our league championship and was also chosen as an all-star both years. After finishing college, I worked as a coach for a junior varsity team. Since then, I have played recreationally and never miss watching games when I have the opportunity.

ESL/ESOL

I am a native speaker of English, I have been teaching ESOL for over twenty years with Miami Dade County Public Schools and Miami Dade College, and I have a Master's degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Florida International University. I have extensive experience in all facets of ESOL including conversation, grammar, reading and writing at all levels from beginning to advanced. I have taught TOEFL prep to many students including the paper/pencil, CBT, and iBT versions. My extensive experience includes working with students speaking many and varied native languages from many different countries. I have also worked with corporate clients, both privately and in small group settings.

Study Skills

With more than 20 years experience as an educator including extensive experience with elementary to high school students, I am fully prepared to help students with study skills. The importance of organization, repetition, prioritizing, and skill development cannot be overstated for academic success. With a master's degree in education from FIU, I have studied the philosophical and research underpinnings of education.

SAT scores markedly improved! Hugh is an excellent tutor. He has worked with my son for the past few months in preparation for the SAT's. His tutoring has resulted in an amazing 280 points increase in my son's Math/Reading SAT scores. I considered several different Prep courses before deciding on Hugh. The cost for a class setting where 12 students share 1 instructor was comparable to the private sessions I set up with Hugh. T ...
