I am a dedicated and patient test prep and math instructor with more than five years' full-time experience in New York tutoring the SAT with a large test prep company, in Buenos Aires running my own college preparation company, and here in Central Florida working as a private tutor.

My students have gone on to their top-choice universities that in many cases were just a dream school when we began the college prep process, including Columbia, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Cornell, MIT, University of Pennsylvania, University of Florida, and University of Miami.

I have 99th percentile scores on all sections of the SAT, ACT, GRE, and GMAT and was a National Merit Finalist because of my SAT scores, receiving a $100,000+ merit-based scholarship to New York University.

Unlike other tutors, I am highly proficient in teaching all sections of these exams AND the subject material behind them, not just the verbal or the quantitative portions, or strategy only. I don't tutor for extra income - this is my career and my passion, and my students have positive experiences and great score increases because of the professionalism and enthusiasm I bring to every session.

I focus on each student by creating an individualized lesson and study plan that adapts to his or her level, motivations, and learning type. I thoroughly enjoy the process of learning what motivates and makes sense to each student and my students benefit greatly.

Staying ahead of changes and updates in the college preparation process is hard work. I regularly take the exams; write, rewrite, and update my prep materials, as well as investigate what the universities are looking for in other areas of the application. Every fall I read applications for an elite national college scholarship program, and I regularly attend college fairs and campus tours.

Please note: As of 19-Nov-2014, I am accepting new test preparation and admissions counseling students. I have Saturday availability now and will have weekday availability beginning 01-Dec-2014. Sessions are typically two hours in length and in-home.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I have been providing college admissions counseling in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to students who wish to enroll at US universities, for the past two years. I worked independently, developing a team of advisers who all helped students with the college search, application essays, financial aid, test preparation, and interviews. I have attended countless college fairs, learning what each university is looking for in the ideal candidate. In this capacity, I've seen my students gone on to top universities such as Harvard, Columbia, Brown, the University of Pennsylvania, and many more. And prior to that, in New York, I prepared student FAFSA and TAP applications (for financial aid) for low-income students.

Genetics

As a biology major at New York University, I took several genetics classes, which was in fact my area of specialty. I completed Introduction to Genetics, Laboratory: Genetics and Genomics, and an advanced systems biology class in which my long-term project was on plant genetics.

While tutoring former students for the SAT Subject Test in Biology, I have focused heavily on both the classical and Mendelian genetics they were to see on that exam, and in their coursework. So I'm happy to help students make sense of Punnett squares, family trees, and anything else in the topic!

Study Skills

The key to all tutoring is developing a student's inherent study skills. As a private tutor with 5 years' experience working with diverse student populations, I have been able to develop questions and a timeline for helping students find the motivation that need to take control of their own learning, and to find the goals they need in order to prioritize their education over competing interests. I can't speak to one specific model of developing study skills beyond what I've already stated, since it is such a unique process for each student.

Incredible tutor — I hired Mel as a ACT tutor for my daughter and both she and I couldn't be any more pleased. Mel was amazing in preparing my daughter for all aspects of the ACT test. Through various exercises and practice tests, my daughter never felt more prepared. Mel had a thorough knowledge of what he was teaching and taught it very well. Mel's test preparation definitely reflected in my daughter's scores. Not ...
