Hello,

my name is Mark. I am from Texas and have lived in the Melbourne area for 12 years. I currently live in Melbourne Beach and work for Harris Corporation.

I enjoy tutoring very much. I particularly enjoy showing people how to clearly understand things so they can succeed. Helping people achieve those "Eureka!" moments is a really great experience.

You will find that I am able to explain complex things in an easy-to-understand way, often in terms of everyday experience. One of my physics tutoring students in college used to walk into my office and say, "I'm here for my kitchen physics lesson!" Her hobby was cooking so I always tried to draw analogies to what she liked best.

I have a bachelor's degree in Physics and a Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology. I also have a CCNA computer networking certification.

I have worked as a computer software engineer in the NASA community for much of my life. I worked on Space Shuttle, Space Station and other projects. I even met Neil Armstrong once. I have also worked in the education field for 6 years.

In college, I taught Physics lab classes and worked as a physics and math tutor. I have also tutored in computer science and taught many, many training sessions in various east central Florida schools.

Personally, I'm focused and easy going. I enjoy playing baseball, swimming and water sports. I also enjoy training and playing frisbee with my shepherd dogs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra (and English) are probably my two most common tutoring subjects. It's a critical skill that is used throughout every lifetime. However, many people have difficulty with Algebra!

Learning Algebra is really learning two skills. The first is the actual mechanics of Algebra - how to perform the math. The second and most difficult is how to read a "word" problem (from your Algebra book, for instance) and convert it into Algebra so it can be solved.

I have found that everyone can pick up the mechanics of algebra with some straight forward coaching, but it is the "word" problems that give the most trouble. Learning how to "set up" the algebra for a word problem is a matter of learning how to think about the problem in a logical, systematic, stepwise way.

I enjoy tutoring Algebra, particularly the "how to" of setting up and solving word problems. This is always where I see the "Eureka!" light blazing brightly in my students.

C

I have about 25 years experience as a software engineer. Many, if not most, of the projects I worked on used the C programming language. These projects included airliner avionics embedded software, GPS software, optical physics software and NASA ground-based software and others. I must have written many tens of thousands of lines of such code.

In addition, while completing my physics degree, I also completed the entire undergraduate core curriculum in computer science and then took some graduate courses in computer science.

COBOL

I have about 25 years of experience as a software engineer. I have worked on many projects that used COBOL. These projects included a complete suite of business software for a major vending company and a complete accounting software suite for an oil company. I have also taught perhaps half a dozen other people how to write COBOL.

In addition, while completing my physics degree, I also completed the entire undergraduate core curriculum in computer science and then took some graduate courses in computer science.

Computer Programming

I have about 25 years experience as a software engineer, lead software engineer and software engineering manager. I have completed projects including embedded airliner avionics, embedded GPS, NASA spacecraft flight software, NASA ground system software, business software, scientific software, etc. I have written computer code in COBOL, FORTRAN, SNOBOL, LISP, C, C++, Ada, PL1 and other languages.

In addition, while completing my physics degree, I also completed the entire undergraduate core curriculum in computer science and then took some graduate courses in computer science.

Fortran

I have over 20 years of experience as a software engineer. I have extensive experience with FORTRAN and have written thousands of lines of FORTRAN code. This code includes everything from student projects all the way to high-level numerical analysis routines I developed for research papers that were published in refereed journals.

While I was completing my Physics degree at Texas A&M University, I also completed the entire undergraduate core curriculum in Computer Science.

I have tutored many students in the FORTRAN programming language and also taught several people how to write FORTRAN code from scratch.

Macintosh

I have over 20 years of experience with Macintosh computers. I have used Macs, as an engineer, both at the MITRE Corporation and also at McDonnell Douglas Astronautics. In addition to these six years of work experience with Macs, I own several of them and have them on a LAN (both wired and wireless) in my home. I use them both for personal and professional purposes.

My Macs run the gamut from an original Power PC Mac running Mac OS 8.5 all the way to my latest Mac laptop which is Intel based and runs the very latest version of Mac OSX. My Intel Mac also runs VMWare Fusion which I use to also runs Microsoft Windows XPpro and Ubuntu Linux 9.10. I also have Microsoft Windows XPpro installed "native" on my Intel Mac using the "Boot Camp" feature.

I have over 20 years of experience as a software engineer. I also hold networking certifications from Cisco (CCNA) and EMC (EMCPA).

Networking (Computer)

I have over 20 years experience in software engineering. This experience was largely in the NASA community and includes experience with Microsoft Windows, UNIX, Macintosh and other platforms. I have worked extensively in every phase of computer software including, requirements analysis, design, development, test, documentation and management.

I currently hold the following certifications:
Cisco CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate)
EMCPA (EMC Proven Professional)

I am currently working on my Linux LPIC certification through SUNY.

When I obtained my physics degree, I also completed the entire undergraduate program in computer science.

Softball

In high school I played shortstop and 2nd base for several community league baseball teams. In college (Texas A&M University) I captained/managed two all-male softball teams for a total of four years. I also captained/managed a co-ed team for one year. In addition to being manager, I was also shortstop, 2nd baseman and pitcher.

After graduation, I captained/managed a co-ed team of technical professionals in the NASA JSC community for a total of two years. In addition to being manager, I was also shortstop, 2nd baseman and pitcher.

I'm a good softball player and after all those years, I am especially good at showing people or teams how to get the most out of their limited practice time.

Fabulous Tutor — Mark is a true blessing! I live in NC and was trying to arrange computer tutoring for an elderly woman in Florida. She lives alone and has no computer experience. Her son lives in Mexico and she is desperate to learn how to Skype and possibly email. I read Mark's profile and was impressed with his background as well as his desire to have his students have that "AH Ha" moment when they actually "GE ...
