I have helped others learn throughout most of my life. Much of my early tutoring was informal – mainly helping friends, classmates, or friends of the family. Later I began to tutor formally and more regularly. I now typically tutor between 5 and 10 hours per week. As the son of high school and college math teacher (dad) and athletics coach (mom) tutoring has seemed to come pretty naturally. Additionally I have coached youth soccer.

I’ve worked for over a decade as an engineer throughout the country and world. I’m a registered Professional Engineer in multiple states. In the course of my engineering work it is imperative to explain technical requirements and concepts to clients who do not have technical backgrounds in an accurate, but simplified way. This is the same approach I take when helping someone with their coursework. While understanding concepts is absolutely the key to grasping subject matter, I am also a firm believer in working examples. During my educational experiences I have learned the most from teachers who understood the importance of concept application.

I attended public high school and was class valedictorian. I have a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, which is a private engineering school focused on undergraduate education. It has been named the number one undergraduate engineering school in the country for the past 14 years by U.S. News and World Report. I received my Masters of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington where I focused on water resources, hydrology, and environmental fluid mechanics.

I’m available to tutor on weekday evenings and on Saturday. I primarily meet people at their homes or a public library, whichever they prefer. As long as the meeting location is within my listed travel radius I only charge for the time spent tutoring, not travel time. For locations further away than 10 miles (20 miles round trip) I typically request either a more central meeting place or that my driving time in excess of the listed travel distance be added to the actual tutoring session time.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Microsoft Excel on a nearly daily basis for more than 15 years. I have used Microsoft Word as a word processor for about 15 years. I can help teach you anything from the basics to more advanced topics like customizing heading fonts and styles; inserting pictures, tables, charts, and captions; automatically creating tables of contents, tables of figures, and tables of tables; adding hyperlinks; tracking changes; adding page and section breaks; etc.

Physics

I've taken both calculus based and non-calculus based physics and a number of other related courses. My strengths are in the topics of forces, motion, energy, fluids, and waves as I've taken additional course work in statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, and coastal engineering. I'm not as strong in thermodynamics, electricity, and magnetism though I have taken both thermodynamics and an introductory electrical engineering course.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have used Microsoft PowerPoint for presentations since the late 1990s. I can help teach you anything from the basics to slightly more advanced topics like inserting pictures, tables, charts, sound effects, and animations; embedding videos; adding hyperlinks; etc.

Precalculus

Pre-calculus (some schools also refer to it as analysis or algebra 3) is a course that helps prepare students for calculus. The topics covered vary to some degree, but general topics include number sets, complex numbers, polar coordinates, vectors, matrices, limits, more complex algebra, and trigonometry. Trigonometry

Once you gain an understanding of definitions, the basic laws (law of sines, cosines, tangents), and relationships trig is not that tough. However, it can be intimidating if you don’t really know where to start. I think I can help you figure out where to start.

SAT Math

The math you need to understand to earn a good score on the SAT is primarily algebra and geometry (the ACT has some trigonometry questions as well). You get penalized for incorrect answers so random guessing will almost certainly lower your score. However, if you can rule out some of the multiple choice answers you can reach a point where guessing can be beneficial to you. GRE

My expertise is really only in the quantitative reasoning (essentially the math and data analysis) section of the GRE. I scored 790 out of 800 on this portion of the exam when I took it. As of August of 2011 the scoring system has changed to a new format where the maximum score is now 170.

ACT Reading

The ACT reading section consists of four reading passages and a total of 40 questions. There is one passage of fiction, one social science passage, one humanities passage, and one natural science passage. The test section is intended to measure your reading comprehension so prior knowledge of the passage topics is not necessary. When I took the ACT in high school I scored in the 98th percentile for reading.

ACT Math

The math subjects you need to understand to earn a good score on the ACT are primarily algebra, geometry, and trigonometry (the SAT generally only requires algebra and geometry knowledge). The ACT doesn't deduct for incorrect responses (like the SAT does) so another important skill to learn is how to eliminate incorrect answers in the event you are unsure of the correct answer. While having a strong background in science helps the test section is more a measure of reasoning and interpretation skills. Track & Field

I was an all-state high school middle distance runner, primarily running the 800m and 1500m. I have developed training plans for distances ranging from 1 mile to a half marathon. I started playing soccer when I was six. I was an all-league midfielder in high school and played intercollegiate soccer (Division III). I have two years experience coaching youth soccer.

AutoCAD

I've used many different releases of AutoCAD starting with AutoCAD 14 (released in 1997). I use the software on a daily to weekly basis while working as a civil engineer. I generally like to use (and suggest others learn by using) the command line since I find it makes using the program easier when upgrading to the latest version.

Microsoft Access

Many people are intimidated by databases and as a result spend a lot of time using a spreadsheet to do the job a database is much better suited at. Setting up a database in Microsoft Access is not that difficult once you know the basics. I taught myself the software using online Microsoft help and various online Access forums. I am most familiar with MS Access 2007.
