I have twenty-five+ years of experience teaching regular and special needs students in public and private schools in Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. I have also worked as a tutor in-home, at after-school programs, home school, and business settings. I earned a master of science degree from Florida State University and hold a current Florida teaching certificate.

I have taught all elementary subjects, but especially enjoy reading (decoding, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension), writing process, language, study skills, and math using hands-on and visual strategies. I have had great success problem solving how each student can learn best and giving them confidence to help develop into life-long learners.

In addition to a MS in Special Education from FSU, I am an experienced educator and have a son with ADD who is grown and a new father himself. I have used multi-sensory methods and programs to more fully engage in learning during a long career in public, private, home school and tutoring settings. I also include short achievable goals, frequent changes in activities, can tolerate fidgitting, and incorporate some movement.

In addition to a MS in Special Education from FSU, I have taught in special education resource rooms in public elementary schools with students with Aspergers diagnosis. I also worked for five years in an assisted living community for mentally handicapped residents, including several with autism. I am creative and resourceful to find ways to problem solve and willing to learn and try new ideas.

In addition to a MS in Special Education from FSU, I have taught in two schools that specialized in dyslexia, ADD, and ADHD using multi-sensory and hands-on activities. I also used the Rene Herman's Reading Program in the resource room with children who were identified as both learning disabled and language disabled. I spent two years working with a home school child as well.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a Florida certified Elementary Special Education Teacher with more than 25 years experience in public, private, home school, and tutoring. I have taught in regular education as well as being a resource teacher and full time special needs teacher in a school for special needs including dyslexia.

I started teaching when penmanship was part of the curriculum and taught it for many years. In addition, cursive writing is an important component of the Rene Herman reading program for dyslexic learners because it helps differentiate the letter symbols in this kinesthetic phonics program.

Phonics and word analysis are key to higher reading skills for average and above average learners. Through three college courses and a long career in special education, with many cycles of curriculum change and in-service training, phonics has never been omitted in my classrooms. I have used multiple reading programs and techniques for teaching phonics.

I have a masters degree in Education with 25+ years of teaching regular and special needs students. I have taught in public schools, private schools, and tutored privately and in after school.

Special Needs

I have a Master's degree in special education with initial certification for specific learning disabilities, intellectual disability, inter-related areas of special education, and behavioral disabilities. In addition to more than 25 years in public and private schools and tutoring, I have done respite, in-home care, and five years with mentally handicapped adults at an assisted living community. As a resident adviser, I assisted with social skill, community and daily living skill development and supervised community trips.

Study Skills

Special education teachers were using idea mapping and mneumonics before research based instruction began. I have used the SRA Study Skills program and incorporated study skills such as mapping ad outlining into as many lessons as possible over the years.
