Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is the foundation for any type of higher math. It can be a lot of fun to solve problems, but often the terminology confuses students.

I will help students to learn how to understand and solve problems, use statistics, solve equations, figure out exponents and do graphing. We will also wander into the land of linear and quadratic functions and try to make sense of all this.

No doubt about it: learning algebra takes work. But I can make it fun, "hands on," and relevant...

Reading

I have more than 30 years of experience in teaching students how to read. I have the ability to make reading enjoyable as students increased their comprehension and fluency. I am very familiar with the FCAT requirements, and my students have enjoyed significant success on this test.

Writing

I am an outstanding writer and a very good teacher of this subject which I love.

I have published two books, one a textbook still in print after 28 years! I also have worked as a newspaper writer and editor, including a stint with a New York Times Company newspaper.

In my 30+ years of teaching, I have helped more than 100 students in their careers with the military. I assist students to learn more about the test and how military recruiters and placement officers use it, to identify strengths relative to the eight sections of the test, and to shore up any weaknesses.

ACT Reading

Dedicated, experienced teacher whose students have experienced significant success in improving their ACT reading comprehension scores. I teach about the test and the questions they will encounter on it. Students practice reading and answering relevant questions with me and for homework.
