Greetings! I have 15 years of teaching experience in the classroom and have been tutoring full-time since January of 2012. I have a true passion for teaching, and mostly a passion for helping students achieve their highest goals. I have experience in the parochial, private, and public schools. I taught K-8 at Assumption Catholic School from 1997-2004 in Speech, Drama, and Spanish, English and Reading to 6th-12th grade ESE students at The Broach School from 2004-2008, and Intensive Reading to 11th and 12th graders at Andrew Jackson High School (public, inner-city, urban in Duval County) from 2009-2011. I also conduct FCAT, ACT, SAT, ASVAB, AP preparation exams, and EOC prep, as well as study skills and bridging activities during the summer months when students do not have school work. While in the classroom my average student came up three grade levels a year in reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, spelling, and language mechanics. My Florida certification was in English 6-12 while in the classroom. I am certified in many subject areas now through WyzAnt and if you check out my profile by subject area you can see where my expertise lies and match it with your current needs. The only subject in which I do not tutor is Mathematics. Before teaching I owned and operated a temporary and permanent personnel service and have a great deal of business experience in Marketing, TQM, Operations Management, Economics, and Leadership.

In addition to tutoring through Wyzant, I have done extensive private tutoring as well. I do quite a bit of tutoring with college students, nine of whom were in the MBA program at JU and one who is currently working on her Master's in Education focused on Leadership Technology at UNF. I have two students at local community colleges (FSCJ and SJRCC) both majoring in business who I tutored through high school. I have raised three children of my own, now in their late 20's and 30's, and all three went to college after graduating from Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville. Several of my students are from Saudi Arabia and India.

My availability depends on my schedule at any one specific time, and can be discussed with you after you establish your account with WyzAnt. I will tutor in your home, provided a parent is present if you or your child are under 18, and also at the various local libraries.

I look forward to helping you or your child succeed in school and working closely with you to achieve success! School was never meant to be a struggle---an effort yes, but not a struggle. Best regards, Kelly Heflin

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have helped many students over the years prepare for their ACT test and am comfortable working with you in English and Reading.

ACT Reading

I have helped many students over the past few years prepare for their ACT. I would be happy to work with you to achieve your goals!

American History

American History is probably one of my favorite areas to teach! It is so exciting to help a student learn the history of our country and how even what happened in 1776 can relate to us today!

Aspergers

I taught many children with Aspergers at The Broach Schools and am well aware of their normally higher than average IQ scores as well as their high end autism. I work with them on developing better social cues and skills and overcoming their challenges.

ASVAB

I have assisted quite a few students in preparing to take the ASVAB. It is a difficult test, but with the right study skills I can help you achieve your goal to serve our country in the military!

Bible Studies

I am well versed in the Old and New Testament and as a Christian can help your child with any religion or bible studies they need assistance with.

Business

From 1986-1995, I owned a franchise for Express Personnel Services. I handled the outside intangible sales with client companies, as well as writing and submitting proposals to same. I also was responsible for the profit/loss statements, 941 IRS tax submissions, workers compensation reports and modifiers, unemployment compensation claims and accounts payable and receivable. Though I had an outside accountant, during the course of the day I handled all of the above aspects of business/marketing/management of 10 employees in office and approximately 100-400 temporary employees on-site at client companies.

Career Development

From 1987-1995 my husband and I owned a franchise of Express Personnel Services. We supplied temporary employees to over 60 companies in Jacksonville. Additionally we provided career guidance to our employees in order to place them with the proper companies for permanent positions.

Classics

I am certified in English and Reading and have a good knowledge of all literature including the classics.

Criminal Justice

I took quite a few classes when I was working on my B.S. in Education in criminal justice. My husband graduated from law school and I helped him with many assignments. I feel I have a good basic knowledge of the legal and criminal justice fields with concentration in forensics.

Dyslexia

While teaching at The Broach Schools, at least 35% of my students were either dyslexic or dysgraphic. I feel comfortable working with students in either group.

Elementary (K-6th)

My background in all subject areas and experience in teaching K-12th qualifies me in all areas of elementary education. I taught at Assumption Catholic School in Jacksonville. I also taught elementary school in Arkansas in Social Studies, Reading, and Drama in the nineteen seventies!

English

My certification is in English and it is my strongest area of expertise on the middle and high school levels. Most of my students have come up several grade levels in language mechanics, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and reading comprehension.

GRE

I will be happy to help you with the verbal portion of the GRE. I do not tutor in the math area. I have several graduate school MBA and graduate school Educational Leadership students.

Marketing

I owned a franchise of Express Personnel Services in Jacksonville from 1986-1995. I handled all outside tangible and intangible sales, and was responsible for marketing all our programs to compete with the other temporary and permanent personnel services in town.

Microsoft Windows

I have been using Windows since its inception in the late 80's. It is a very user friendly operating system. Currently I use WindowsXP but am familiar with Vista also. I look forward to learning about the new Windows 7.

Phonics

As a Reading teacher I am well versed in the teaching of phonics vs. whole language. The four basics of reading are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and reading comprehension. All are required for successful reading skills.

Psychology

I have tutored many AP students through Psychology on the high school level with great success!

Public Speaking

Public Speaking in Secondary Education was my major field for my Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Arkansas.

Reading

I have taught as many reading classes as I have English and Language Arts. My students generally come up several grade levels in a year in reading comprehension with lots of fun strategies that I can teach them.

Religion

I minored in Theology in college and am well acquainted with all major world religions and their tenets and beliefs.

Social Studies

As noted in my ability to teach European and American History as well as Government and Politics I am qualified to also teach Social Studies.

Sociology

Sociology was one of my minors in college. This included studies in cultural mores, international relations with LDCs (Less Developed Countries) and the study of socioeconomic differences between cultures.

Study Skills

All teachers must be qualified in teaching study skills for without proper study skills a student has little chance of succeeding in any subject area. I am well qualified to teach proper study skills and employ many tactics such as mnemonic devices and other "fun" ways to study.

Theatre

I directed K-12 drama productions and my minor in college was in dramatic arts. From 1997-2005 I directed over 50 children's theatre productions at Assumption and Bishop Kenny; including "Annie" "Our Town" "The Miracle Worker" "Little Shop of Horrors" "Cheaper by the Dozen" "Romeo and Juliet" "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory" and many others. I also worked at the River City Playhouse.

Writing

Do you want to improve your English writing skills? I have tutored numerous high school and college as well as graduate level students in the proper way to write essays, term papers, etc. Many of these students are from foreign countries where English is a second language for them! Let me know how I can help you achieve your goals!
