I am a high school social studies teacher with over 30 years of experience, additionally; I have specialized in Advanced Placement History for 10 of those years with better than an 80 percent pass rate in AP European History, AP US History, AP World History and AP Human Geography. In working with these College Board programs, I am employed by the College Board as a test reader, table leader for test grading and a national presenter for other Advanced Placement teachers. In doing so, I have gained deep understanding of how to write college level historical analysis. I have tremendous strengths in thesis writing, understanding point of view, and teaching students to express themselves at the collegiate level in all levels of historical writing: essay, book review, and historiography. With a Masters of History college degree and over 35 years of experience in secondary education, students who follow my program have a high success rate at major universities. My students are not intimidated by their college essay assignments. Strong analytical writing is the cornerstone to pleasing college professors.

Additionally, I have taught high school and conversational Spanish, German, and English for Speakers of other Languages, plus some limited experience in Latin. I have an extensive background in playing and coaching sports and other extracurricular activities. I have successfully tutored in all grade levels.

I strive to bring an attitude of teamwork to learning. My students learn by doing through a variety of activities that keep them focused on skill development. By teaching and reinforcing these skills students quickly master their own learning styles and solve new problems confidently. I love to share the joy of success in their education with my students to make them “life-long learners”.

Bible Studies

The Bible is a great history book of God’s work among His people. As a teacher in two different Christian schools I have developed a wide series of lessons on the Bible. As a history major I understand the growth of such a powerful resource and have used this knowledge to enlighten biblical studies in both religious and secular classrooms. I find students respond best to biblical studies when I give historical backgrounds and geographical references to supplement the lessons.

I have been involved as a Sunday school teacher for adults and have also done children’s church as well as VBS. I have a thorough understanding of both the Old and New Testaments as well as most word epistemologies.

ESL/ESOL

Because I am fluent in many foreign languages, I am frequently asked to help students who are just learning to cope with the English language. I have had everything from entire classes of all non-English speakers to individual students with needs for assistance. My ESOL teaching experience is mainly in grades 7- 12, as well as adults in ESOL classes. In addition to teaching the English language, I help with their coping skills and demonstrate to them how to study and utilize valuable resources on their own.

European History

I have a masters degree in European History and have taught AP European History for the last nine years. I have several direct links to Europe including study abroad programs.

In my AP classes I have had students earn better than 90% receive a 3 or higher and gain college credit.

Football

Football is a great passion of mine both as a player and coach. It is skill based and my approach in teaching is similar whether on the field or in the classroom. I have had great success in the arena of football with several undefeated teams and championships.

I have been involved in the game at all three phases; offense, defense and special teams. As a tight end in college, I developed strong teaching techniques especially as a receiver. I have am strong background in both tactics and training. My background in soccer also gives me great insight into the art of kicking.

Religion

As both a World History and Human Geography teacher I have does extensive work with comparative religions. I have done student projects and analysis of most of the world's great religions.

Also, I have been involved as a Sunday school teacher for adults and have also done children’s church as well as VBS. I have a thorough understanding of both the Old and New Testaments as well as most word epistemologies.

Soccer

I am passionate about the game of soccer. I have a high level of understanding of the game having played it in college. I have coached both boys and girls at the high school level. I truly enjoy the game especially on the international level. I have been fortunate to view several European matches live and fan enthusiasm is electrifying in the world’s game.

Social Studies

Social Studies is my certified teaching field. I have a strong history and political science background and have taught the entire curriculum. The social sciences are often considered as boring by students, but I have found that by making connections between their current interests and the classroom subject, students quickly see the relevance and enjoy learning about the social studies. Sociology, economics, history and government come alive when student see direct and relevant connections to their daily lives.

Sociology

Sociology is an important part of the social studies curriculum. I have been a teacher and have done significant course work in the field for many years.

I wrote the state curriculum for Tennessee in sociology and served on the committee to make sociology more accessible to high school students and teachers.

Study Skills

As a classroom teacher and a student myself, I have developed many effective learning strategies that enable students to organize their study time and receive great results from the same amount of time. It is not studying longer but how to best use ones time to retain and utilize information. I teach many types of organizers including Cornell notes, time management, and how to limit distractions. These will help students both in the classroom and at study time to make the best use of their time and effort.
