Hello! I would like to introduce myself to you as a teacher who both likes to inspire and be inspired. My masters degree in Transpersonal Studies has enabled me to connect with students in a way that we are able to understand each other. Everyone has different learning styles and ways of looking at the world around them. I believe teaching to be a tool in which to bring out the best in a student, encourage the spark within to shine and allow for growth through learning.
My teaching style encompasses passion, compassion for the needs of the student, listening to the challenges and creating sustainable solutions. I am a combination of demonstrator and facilitator.
As a demonstrator my style is teacher-centred with an emphasis on demonstration and modeling. With this type of teaching I act as a role model by demonstrating skills and processes and then as a coach/guide helping students develop and apply these skills and knowledge. I show my students how to properly do a task or work through a problem and then I'll help them master the task or problem. It's important that my students can independently solve similar problems by using and adapting demonstrated methods. I am interested in encouraging student participation and adapting their presentation to include various learning styles. Students are expected to take some responsibility for learning what they need to know and for asking for help when they don't understand something.
As a facilitator I focus on activities. This teaching style emphasizes student-centered learning and there is much more responsibility placed on the students to take the initiative for meeting the demands of various learning tasks. This type of teaching style works best for students who are comfortable with independent learning and who can actively participate and collaborate with other students. I design learning situations and activities that require student processing and application of course content in creative and original ways.
My Educational Background:
Atlantic University, Transpersonal Studies, Masters 2009
East Carolina University, Business Vocation and Technical Education, BS 1986
I have been teaching courses in a variety of areas including stress management, sustained focus, meditation and keys to success. I am looking to help students by expanding my teaching skills into the tutoring environment.
I love to see the success of my students when they overcome fear and broaden their awareness. By building self esteem and confidence I can create a way for students to learn and grow.
Public speaking is an art of communication and engaging the audience for optimal reception of your presentation. In order to be successful at publice speaking the following are important tips to follow:
1. Know Your Material- know more than you include in your speech. Use humor, personal stories and conversational language.
2. Practice. Practice. Practice! Rehearse out loud with all equipment you plan on using. Control filler words, remember to pause and breathe. Using a timer is very helpful and recommended.
3. Know The Audience. Be present when audience members arrive, so you can greet them. It’s easier to speak to a group of friends than to strangers.
4. Know the room. Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using the microphone and any visual aids.
5. Relax. Begin by addressing the audience. It buys you time and calms your nerves.
6. Imagine Yourself Speaking. This gives you a sense of familiarity and to feel comfortable with your speech.
7. Success. An audience wants you to be engaging by being interesting, stimulating, informative and entertaining. They want to leave feeling educated, inspired or informed.
8. Focus. Concentrate on the message and not any nervousness or feelings of being uncomfortable.
Your speech represents you, so experience brings out the best. This builds confidence and leads to better speeches.
In my many years of teaching I understand that students have different styles. They can be broken down into the following:
•Verbal mastery. Students can demonstrate learning through panel discussions and debates, creating audio tapes, delivering lectures, and by role playing.
•Written mastery. Students can demonstrate learning through any of the following written products: research papers, journals, reports, essays, and letters.
•Visual mastery. Students can create any of the following to show what they have learned: illustrations, posters, diagrams, time lines, collages, and maps.
•Kinesthetic mastery. Students can create exhibits, sculptures, dioramas, and puzzles to show what they have learned.
By first establishing which style best fits the student, then I am able to assist them in the best way for studying and demonstrating what they are learning.
Teaching that resonates with a students way of processing information and delivering helps with boosting self esteem, confidence and allows the student to succeed.
When I work with a student in the area of study skills I determine where their weaknesses and strengths are and then focus on the strengths and work to bring the weaknesses into strengths. I encourage my students to find what feels good for them and then use that as a basis to transform any struggles into success.
Very Understanding! — Mrs. B was extremely HELPFUL in teaching me how to understand the ACT. She also taught me how to calm myself and not letting the test stress me out. She has helpful techniques on how to just calm yourself and not to put pressure on yourself. What I loved is that she lets you start on a pace your comfortable with, while explaining any problems you had trouble with. Mrs. B never told me what I just ...
