My first formal teacher in Jamaica taught me that mathematics is the basis for all other structures. Thus, being grounded in its principles would lead to mastery in any other subject that I wished to pursue. I am always challenging myself to comprehend this master subject. The great philosopher Seneca said that men learn while they teach, so I was and am always willing to help those who wish to learn this subject.
The subjects I will be tutoring will be Algebra and Precalculus. I spent two years teaching 8th - 10th grade students at Sylvan Learning center as well as three years teaching young college students at Miami Dade Community College. It was a rewarding experience removing the perceptual blocks preventing others from understanding the subject matter. I also participated in a study utilizing new techniques.
Learning to think mathematically comes naturally for some. Not so for others. I have always been curious why that roadblock exists. So maybe we can discover why that is together.
