As a former elementary music educator, a homeschool parent, and a musician, my life revolves around the concept of 'lifetime learning.' I aspire to share that concept with all my students, whether in music or in the application of other skills in reading, sciences, or math to how they apply to real life. "Family First" is not just a name but a philosophy to empower the family to be the source of knowledge, not just the tutor as a master teacher.

I teach piano, music theory and accompanying, including jazz and contemporary styles, in both group and private lessons. I can coach and tutor most elementary subjects. I specialize in helping homeschool families to organize and apply their curriculum of choice to any field or desired educational goal. Vocabulary

My experience as an educator in both homeschool and public school settings allows me a unique perspective in vocabulary. I use root word concepts to help students apply their own background knowledge to new vocabulary, as well as etymological (word study) practices. Knowing the Latin or Greek roots of a certain word leads to an understanding of many more words.

Reading

My experience as an educator in both homeschool and public school settings allows me a unique perspective in tutoring reading skills. I have experience in both phonics and whole language styles of reading instruction.

Music Theory

I have 16 years experience in teaching general music (preK-12) including music theory. I combine my experience in jazz, classical and other styles to the definitions and concepts that form the foundation of musical theory. Theory is not a separate part of music just like addition is not a separate part of math. I help students see that knowledge theory actually helps a performer to express herself or himself more clearly.

Writing

Trained by the Institute for Excellence in Writing - "Teaching Writing: Structure and Style" Course, which provides students with a step-by-step process to improve their writing in two ways:modeling good writers and using carefully designed formats to increase writing quality.

Composition (Music)

I have composed and arranged for concert band, jazz band, marching ensembles, string quartets, piano and other solo instruments. I studied jazz composition with Gary Lindsay at University of Miami. My piano arrangements were recorded by pianist Ruth Ann Galatas on her album "A More Gentle Time" released in 2002.

Ear Training

I have over 20 years of music theory experience, combining knowledge of classical and jazz harmony. I use interval and scale training to help students to learn to play by ear.

Elementary (K-6th)

My certification in music education included general education certification to teach in Miami Dade Schools. I took workshops in reading and mind-mapping strategies for better comprehension. These strategies included test taking strategies and reading comprehension in music lessons.

I have 16 years experience in teaching music history (preK-12). I have worked for 8 years as a teacher in Miami-Dade schools. I combine knowledge of the classical musical periods with information about world music and American styles to help students understand how music has evolved into the 21st century.

Piano

I graduated from University of Miami with a B.Music Education, with emphasis on jazz piano. I performed with the Tampa Bay Symphony at age 17. I have taught students from age 4 to adults in every style. Using both group and private lesson methods, including the unique Mayron Cole Method, my students learn not just proper technique, but the process of making their piano skills flow from true musical expression.

Study Skills

I am trained in Project CRISS (Creating Independence through Student-owned Strategies), a national study skills program designed to help students identify and organize information in reading and research.

Songwriting

As a pianist and music director I've worked with countless artists and singers as a co-writer, producer and songwriting coach. My credits include a second place finish for my song "Come My Way" in the 1996 MasterCard National Talent Search and an honorable mention for my song "Nothing Without Love" in the Mid-Atlantic Songwriters Contest in 2010.
