I am 23 years old. I just graduated from Florida International University in August of 2013 with dual degrees in Political Science and International Relations. I have a minor in Philosophy and a certificate in Law, Ethics, and Society. I graduated top 10% of my class with a 3.87 GPA. I recently received a temporary teaching certificate for 6-12 social studies. I am now a reading interventionist at a local high school.
My experience started off teaching my little cousins one day who were in 6th and 9th grade but now I have branched out. I have tutored my peers' little siblings in Geography and European History among previous classmates at Florida International University in Latino Politics and American History. Now, I work along side a charismatic English teacher and teach intelligent high school students every week day.
Parents, if your son/daughter is struggling in areas such as U.S. History, European History, Government, Geography, Civics, Politics, Philosophy... or anything in the realm of social studies, you've come to the right place! All I need to know is what book they are studying from so I can reference it and like a superhero I will come to their academic rescue! I hope you all are having a wonderful and productive day!
Note: I will also be tutoring in Spanish (my native tongue along with taking over 5 years of Spanish courses), Art History, all Elementary subjects, and English.
I am currently tutoring in mathematics to a 4th grader and have tutored many children from ages five through twelve in the past in subjects such as reading, writing, science, and mathematics for over six years.
I have worked with over twenty elementary school students anywhere between a few months to two years for every child on a one-on-one basis. I am certified in both elementary math and elementary science on this site.
I began tutoring elementary students around my neighborhood and now expanded thanks to word-of-mouth by my previous elementary students and through tutoring my friends' children and little siblings. Children have trouble understanding the basic fundamental concepts administered by teachers, and hence, fall behind as the concepts increase in difficulty.
In my experience with tutoring elementary children, I have incorporated visual and text-based teaching methods that highlight each topic at hand until I can locate their troubles and alter it accordingly. For instance, I had a 4th grader of the age of ten who could not add or subtract fractions. However, by returning to the basic concepts, I found that she just needed to memorize her multiplication tables and now she excels in adding and subtracting fractions. Another illustration is when I tutored a kindergarten student of the age of six who could not write the alphabet properly. He would write the letter b like the letter d. Thus, I taught him how to distinguish left and right directions. Once he mastered his knowledge of directions, he memorized that b is right and d is left because getting a b is more ’’right’’ than getting a d in terms of grading. It was a fun but educational way for him to overcome his struggle.
Overall, my teaching strategy for elementary students is effective because I review their previous assignments in mathematics, science, reading, or writing and witness what do they constantly get incorrect and how I can find the underlying issue that stems from lack of understanding.
During my time at Florida International University, I took a plethora of music history courses. I took The History of The Beatles, The History of Rock Music, Music Appreciation, Evolution to Jazz, and The History of Contemporary Popular Music. From middle school and high school, I was in band and I played the flute. The more I learned about specific instruments, rhythms, music genres, crescendos, tempos, and the artists themselves and their stories, the more fascinated I became with music theory and studying it. Music has always been embedded within me and I know I can aid any student in grasping music concepts that will open a door to a new-found take when listening and understanding music.
