Dear Parents and Students,
I am an honest, energetic person who seeks to better himself every day. I am physically active, and like staying politically and socially aware. I have a positive outlook on the world, and enjoy learning and spreading the common good. I received my Bachelor's in Elementary Education (K-6) through Appalachian State University. I have experience in several grades levels. I have done 8 weeks of one-on-one tutoring with a 2nd grader. I had a great time tutoring this student. He was an English as a second language learner, which is one of the reasons I was chosen for him because I was one of the few bilingual tutors in the Boone, North Carolina area where I attended university. I tutored him in all subject matter, concentrating on spelling, grammar and vocabulary due to the language barriers he was facing.
I participated in a program for 8 weeks tutoring a small group of 4th graders. In this experience I had two groups of students for 4 weeks each. This group of students was a mixture of low level math students, for whom I put together a series of lessons and activities in order to catch them up in geometry, and long division math. I continued my experiences as a 12-week teacher's assistant in a 5th grade class. The teacher's assistant experience was a great one because I took a bigger role in classroom management and behavioral management. I taught multiple lessons in math, reading, science, social studies and history.
One of the major experiences I have had has been the 18-week teacher practicum in a 3rd grade classroom. During this time I took sole control of a 3rd grade classroom doing all the responsibilities that a full-time teacher would be handling. I made pre and post assessment of each student on all subject matter. Giving data as proof I submitted indications on what each individual student needed to increase their potential. I focused on structuring lessons in a specific manner in order to cross over into various subject areas, a strategy that increases student retention ability.
My tutoring method would be a mixture of various teaching strategies depending on what the individual tutee may need and what can give them a unique connection to the material being learned. Each student has their own individual needs and strengths. I would start with the multi-intelligence approach. Once the needs and strengths are gathered one can decide which are the student’s most dominant intellectual traits. We can then focus on those traits to enhance the academic weakness and improve student performance. The strategies used with tutees would be adaptable in each case due to the cooperation with teachers and parents to decide on the appropriate path of instruction to ensure productivity and academic growth. All work is done in the interest of producing positive academic and social growth in each student.
I am excited to meet you and hope to provide and learn from all of our experiences.
Sincerely
Mr. Frank A. C.
