I am an experienced educator with over thirty five years teaching and administrative experience in Florida schools. I have a Masters Degree in Reading K through Twelve, a BA in Elementary Education with certification in Early Childhood, and a Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership. Most of my career has been spent successfully remediating reading with students two or more years below their grade level in skills. I have taught all grades kindergarten through fifth in the classroom and in special pullout classes and successfully tutored kindergarten through college level students. I currently am subbing in classes at kindergarten through twelfth grade.
As well as reading and writing skills I can help students acquire the study skills necessary to become successful in elementary, middle, high school, and college classes. I tutor all subjects kindergarten through 8th grade and Reading at all levels. I prefer to tutor Math through eighth grade level only but have assisted high school and college level students in basic Math. Difficulties in Social Studies and Science in Middle School and High School are often the result of poor reading or study skills. I can help with these. I can also assist in preparation for GED and SAT testing and in test taking skills at all levels. I have experience and success in working with Learning Disabled students.
My approach in working with all students is to formally evaluate their reading level and try to learn their learning styles. I need to learn about a student's interests as well. As we work together I try to teach to learning strengths and strengthen the weaknesses to maximize progress. Studying about a student's areas of interest helps make learning enjoyable. I like to obtain permission to communicate with teachers of my students to tap their knowledge of the student and make him or her more successful at school. I can work with materials the student is using in class or provide my own to supplement or strengthen skills. Games with students through middle school level are used to break the rigors of one on one instruction and build skills in a fun manner. With all learning in all subjects, learning how to learn and enjoying it are requisite to positive results. Together my students and I achieve this.
I took a course in this during my Master's Degree in Reading. I have had many in-service classes in this area as well. I have had many of these students in my classes over thirty five years and done much successful teaching and tutoring with them.
