ADD/ADHD

With a master's degree in reading and writing, and years of experience as a special education director, I am experienced working with students who have been given the medical diagnosis of ADD or ADHD. I have developed strategies for securing student attention and/or hyperactivity so they can address the tasks necessary to learn and master new subjects.

Elementary (K-6th)

I recently retired from my faculty post at Marymount University. There, I taught in the teacher preparation/ licensure program, getting students prepared for elementary and secondary teaching positions. I supervised student teachers, and helped graduate students prepare to take the required state licensure exams. All content areas (K-6) were addressed.

GED

I taught GED classes for several years, and the population I used for my doctoral dissertation was a group of GED students in northern New England. I understand the unique challenges faced by this population. I am experienced and skilled teaching all GED subjects and am very familiar with the GED test itself. My students have experienced success on their GEDs after having studied with me.

Grammar

Understanding grammar is essential to the accurate transmission of ideas in any language. Knowledge of grammar also facilitates acquisition of additional languages and its value is often underestimated.

Phonics

One of the graduate courses I taught at Marymount University involved early language acquisition, the basic elements of which are phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, word recognition, and comprehension. An in-depth look into each of these was the focus of that course.

Proofreading

In addition to having just passed the test, I have been a freelance writer, ghost writer, and editor for many years. In addition, I have taught grammar and linguistics at the university level.

Public Speaking

I was a regularly scheduled emcee at the annual Cocheco Arts Festival each summer in Dover, NH. I also served as a eulogist in my community.

As a school administrator, public speaking was a part of my job, and I regularly spoke at televised school board meetings.

Finally, as a member of my local chamber of commerce, I addressed civic organizations through public speaking events.

Reading

Reading is a meaning-making activity. I have taught reading for over twenty years at all grade levels: elementary, secondary, undergrad, and GRE. I also have a master's degree in reading.

SAT Reading

I have a master's degree in reading and have taught reading in grades one through twelve. I have also taught teachers how to teach reading in their content areas.

SAT Writing

I am a publisher author and have a master's degree in writing. I have taught writing in elementary, secondary, and post graduate levels. I have tutored students in writing with continued success.

Social Studies

One of the graduate courses I taught at Marymount University was, "Teaching Social Studies and English at the Secondary Level." Through this coursework, I engaged my students in creative ways of teaching both familiar and unfamiliar topics in social studies. This included the use of technology and new, research-based methodologies.

Spelling

Spelling is considered to be part of vocabulary. As a language arts teacher at multiple levels (elementary, secondary, etc.), I have used etymology as one of many tools to approach spelling. Further, using context is critical to the correct spelling of a word (e.g. the word "bare" is spelled differently based on the context in which it is used).

Study Skills

As a GED, adult high school diploma, and classroom teacher, I taught study skills so students could make meaningful connections to their subjects. Creating ways for students to aster content involved an emphasis on study skills.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is considered one of the five building blocks in language acquisition. Without a strong foundation in vocabulary, one's ability to communicate is stunted. The approach to teaching vocabulary may include sight word development, etymology, word structure, and context. The development of a strong vocabulary will contribute to intellectual growth and communication.

Writing

I am a published author and have a master's degree in writing. I have taught writing at all educational levels: elementary, secondary, undergrad, graduate. Research tells us that writing skills enhance reading skills, and developing reading skills enhances writing skills. I continue to teach writing at the undergraduate level, and students often discover and comment on the reading-writing connection.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
