My passion for education began at an early age, when I noticed that student success had more to do with how the student was taught than anything about the particular student's intelligence or ability. In 6th grade, I started my first literacy education program, in which 5th and 6th graders mentored 1st - 5th graders in literacy through educational games, poetry, crafts, puzzles and more. Enrollment jumped from 10 students to over 100 in less than a year, including two autistic children. The results were impressive, with students who were initially ashamed to read aloud in class soon becoming the first to volunteer to read the poem they wrote. Since then, I have spent much of my personal and professional life exploring how creative approaches to education can help every student succeed.

This experience has included private tutoring since 2000, curriculum development for arts integration and character/career development programs, homework assistance as a K-8 after care activity leader, and computer and research assistance as a library professional assistant. As an undergraduate and graduate student, I often informally peer tutored classmates who needed extra support. I have also been a volunteer Scout leader for over 10 years, planning and leading weekly activities for youth ages 6-18, as well as serving as assistant Camp Director.

With over 10 years of experience in youth development and education, I understand that each person learns differently. I work with the student and his/her support network (family, teachers, etc.) to create a customized learning plan tailored to meet the student's individual needs, goals, and learning style.

I specialize in early literacy, English / reading / writing / spelling (K-12), basic math (K-5), pre-algebra, algebra, social studies (K-5), science (K-5), basic study skills / time management, homework assistance, and computer skills (typing, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher). I can also be available for additional subjects upon request, including Test Prep. I have had success working with students with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning and behavioral challenges.

I believe one of the keys to quality education is making the content interesting, relevant and accessible. By getting to know the student's existing skills and interests, I am able to capitalize on these strengths to work on areas in need of improvement. This helps to keep students engaged and confident, and increases lasting understanding of the subject. I also challenge the student to explore new areas and to exceed even their own expectations. I set the bar high and then provide individualized support and guidance to meet those goals. Students are often surprised at how much they are able to accomplish once they begin to look at the subject matter in a different way.

My primary goal is to help the student improve in the desired subject. Along the way, I aim to help the student learn more about themselves and the way they learn, so they can succeed in future classes as well. I am committed to educating "the whole child" and, in addition to tutoring for specific course content, I help students develop good study habits, time management, and related life skills to help the student succeed far beyond the classroom.

I look forward to working with you to create the right plan for your success. I offer a free consultation meeting and welcome any questions or feedback during every step of the process.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have an M.S. in Business Leadership from the Huizenga School of Business at Nova Southeastern University and completed the Business Bridge Program at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. I have held a variety of positions within multiple types of businesses, most recently serving as Operations Director of a 501c3 NPO for 3 years.

College Counseling

I have over 10 years of experience working and volunteering with youth development programs, with a strong focus on college and career readiness. I served as a peer advisor in college and helped new and prospective students, especially first-generation and historically underrepresented students, with the transition to college life. I have served as an alumni interviewer for Dartmouth College, and through my personal and volunteer network have informally advised and assisted high school students with the college application process.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have over 10 years of experience successfully tutoring K-6 students in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and general study skills. In addition to helping students improve their grades in the short term, I focus on helping students understand core concepts and build effective study habits for continued success in the future. Rather than encouraging rote memorization, I take the time to help students understand the "why" and "how" behind the work, making the material relevant to their own experiences and interests. This helps students develop lasting understanding and makes it easier for them to learn more advanced topics in the future.

Sociology

I received my B.A. in Sociology from Dartmouth College. Working in program development and grant writing for non-profit organizations, I continue to read about and study the field both personally and professionally.
