As a parent, I understand that we all want our children to be successful in their academic and personal endeavors. As a teacher, I understand that children have diverse experiences, needs, learning styles, and motivations. For the past twelve years, I have been a full-time parent and a full-time educator, with a passion for creating life long learners of students ages 3 to college-age. It is my desire to provide students with the requisite tools and skills essential to becoming motivated and successful learners in the 21st century.
Oftentimes, student success is a simply a function of assisting the student in finding meaning and relevance in the material to be learned. And sometimes, students may have a neurobiological challenge, such as dyslexia or auditory processing issues which have not been adequately addressed. And sometimes, a student's learning style is different than that of the instructor, thereby making it much more difficult for the student to comprehend information.
My parenting, teaching and tutoring experience, coupled with my Master's of Education degree in Brain-Based Teaching and Learning have provided me innumerable joyful opportunities to see the children in my life grow and prosper academically and personally. I am hopeful that I can assist you in providing that to your children as well. As a parent, I understand that we all want our children to be successful in their academic and personal endeavors. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As the owner/operator of a small private college-prep school, my end goal has always been success. One of the ways in which our society defines success is through college graduation. Having already navigated a number of students to acceptance (and sufficient financing) at public and private, in-state and out-of-state colleges, provides me with the knowledge and skill set to navigate additional students through this process. I have spent countless hours over several years, on the telephone with college admissions officers, college visits, consultations with financial aid and scholarship providers, as well as personally having successfully navigated my own (homeschooled) child into several highly selective colleges with full academic scholarships. I do understand the complexities of this process and enjoy assisting families through this sometimes overwhelming time in a student's life.
I have home-educated my own four children for the past 14 years teaching grades pre-k to early admission college level. For the past three years I have been director/administrator and lead teacher at a small private school in West Broward, with students ranging from 3 to 16. In addition, I have a Master of Education degree in Brain-based teaching and learning which provides specific training and education in the science of learning, particularly as it is implemented in the k-12 population.
I have an earned Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. During this time in college, I developed a strong interest in Genetics and pursued a concentration in this subject. I am currently teaching a course in biology with an emphasis on genetics. Furthermore, I have continued my education in this arena by enrolling in, and participating in, a biology course heavily emphasizing genetics and cell biology.
I have a Master of Science in Education in Brain-based teaching and learning. This education, along with 14 years of teaching my own children in a homeschool environment, as well as full-time tutoring of other students with diverse learning styles, provides me with ample ability and experience to teach others to read.
Furthermore, I understand that teaching phonics is most effective for some students, but not for all. The ability to assess each student's needs, and determine the most beneficial method of reading instruction is even more important, in my opinion, than the strict ability to teach "phonics".
I have more than 15 years experience instructing and tutoring students with special needs. I have been the primary instructor students with dyslexia, auditory processing issues, Aspeger's, and autism spectrum disorder. Furthermore, I have been employed by the Dan Marino Foundation, Inc. (a foundation devoted specifically to meeting the needs of children and students with special needs) as an instructor, job coach, and manager. My private client base includes students with a variety of learning challenges, including all of the above. I myself, was a gifted student, and understand that giftedness is also a special need, especially as it relates to a traditional classroom environment.
In addition to being an educator for 15 years, as well as a successful student in my own right, I earned a Master's of Science in Education, majoring in Brain-Based Teaching and Learning. These, in combination, have equipped me with the ability to transfer the skills I use, have learned, and recognize as being important to learning. An essential component of my master's program was understanding the "soft" skills necessary to be achieve. Most often bright students have difficulty in succeeding, not because of an inherent cognitive defect, but rather an inability to manage time, issues with spatial orientation, or deficits in note-taking strategies. In the world of work, I, as Job Coach for adults with learning challenges, recognize that employers need students that are creative, are prepared, and can think for themselves.
