To my prospective students and parents,

The art of learning has always intrigued me, while the art of teaching to the blank canvas of a student’s mind has fascinated me equally. As a teacher, cultivating one’s student’s thirst for knowledge and his/her desire to take no answer at face value is how society’s youth thrives. My goal to be a teacher is due to my passion for giving back to the members of my community and society; a society that my young son is growing up in. I want all the children I encounter to have educational opportunities that will enrich their lives. My experiences living abroad, adapting to, and becoming part of a different culture, has enlightened me and assisted in my development of skills necessary for teaching a diverse student population.

Knowing how to speak and write properly is fundamental to one’s success. If a child is not given language tools the correct way it has the potential to stunt their academic development throughout their whole educational career. I believe that sometimes people fail just because they have never been introduced to a different way of thinking; I read once that learning is the result of thinking and that has stuck with me. For example, almost anyone can memorize a formula but if a child understands the process they can apply this to a variety of equations in different subjects. I believe it is a combination of things that make one successful, not just one trait will get you through life. You can be a genius but still not be successful. A teacher needs to help children identify their strengths and improving their weaknesses.

With all my students I start our journey with setting goals, creating organization and developing study skills before focusing on the subject in which they are struggling. When setting goals I will help identify where the student would like to end up and the best manner to get there. When we establish the long term goals we can then identify the requirements of the short term objectives. When a student and I create a system of organization we will create binders that will effectively keep track of all their work from the syllabus to their exams. With these binders the student will be able to reference their mistakes so they are not repeated and will enable me to track their progress. Finally, I will share a variety of study skills including, but not limited to, note taking, time management and study sheets. Once these tools have been established we can then focus on the problem areas for a specific subject.

My approach to tutoring is to ask questions to the students so they may be able to lead themselves to the correct answers when I am not there, for example during their exams. Students will have a greater chance of success if they train their brain connect what they do know to what they are trying to figure out. This approach is sometimes called the Socratic Method or the inquiry method; I have found this method has helped to replace fear or complex subjects or problems with confidence.

I offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish; along with this degree I have multiple years in extensive employment. My experience abroad and with the Spanish language has proved to be an indispensable skill. During my years at University of South Florida I succeeded in taking two semesters of education classes to enhance my Spanish degree. I not only have experience in tutoring, I also hold a statement of eligibility to teach Spanish K-12 in the state of Florida.

I hope I may have the opportunity to help your child reach their full learning potential!

Best Regards

Heather
