As a former elementary music educator, a homeschool parent, and a musician, my life revolves around the concept of 'lifetime learning.' I aspire to share that concept with all my students, whether in music or in the application of other skills in reading, sciences, or math to how they apply to real life. "Family First" is not just a name but a philosophy to empower the family to be the source of knowledge, not just the tutor as a master teacher.
I coach and tutor elementary, middle and high school students in various subjects, focusing on study skills, interdisciplinary learning, and classical study techniques. I specialize in helping families to organize and apply their curriculum of choice to any field or desired educational goal. By putting the family first, I can incorporate any style of learning to help your family raise confident and challenge-ready students.
I also am a 20 year veteran musician and music teacher with almost 10 years experience as a public school music teacher in Miami Dade Schools. I specialized in music technology, music theory, and I now help both children and adults become musically literate through piano. I can teach all styles, including pop, jazz, gospel, and rock. Music is about connecting the eye, the hand, and the ear to help one to 'make the music they were meant to make'. That is our philosophy and we don't force students into a classical or formal mindset in order to enjoy performing and learning.
I look forward to helping you and your students achieve their goals in any field, musically or academically. Success is a call away!
I have composed and arranged for concert band, jazz band, marching ensembles, string quartets, piano and other solo instruments. I studied jazz composition with Gary Lindsay at University of Miami. My piano arrangements were recorded by pianist Ruth Ann Galatas on her album "A More Gentle Time" released in 2002.
I have over 20 years of music theory experience, combining knowledge of classical and jazz harmony. I use interval and scale training to help students to learn to play by ear.
I worked in several elementary schools in Miami Dade Schools for 8 years, and used reading and mind-mapping strategies for better comprehension for my students. These strategies included test taking strategies and reading comprehension.
I tutored FCAT and reading for "A Smart Place to Be" Tutoring Services for Miami-Dade Schools, as well as the "Restoring Dignity" after school program in math and reading using Abeka curriculum programs. All students in my class increased FCAT scores.
I have spent many years tutoring with and using several math curricula including Math - U - See and Saxon Math. My experience as a music teacher allows me to help students break down math into easy - to - comprehend examples.
I have 16 years experience in teaching general music (preK-12), including music theory, keyboards, music history, recorders, percussion, and choral music. I have worked for 8 years as a teacher in Miami-Dade schools, as well as gave private instruction as a coach for professional musicians.
I have 16 years experience in teaching music history (preK-12). I have worked for 8 years as a teacher in Miami-Dade schools. I combine knowledge of the classical musical periods with information about world music and American styles to help students understand how music has evolved into the 21st century.
I have 16 years experience in teaching general music (preK-12) including music theory. I combine my experience in jazz, classical and other styles to the definitions and concepts that form the foundation of musical theory. Theory is not a separate part of music just like addition is not a separate part of math. I help students see that knowledge theory actually helps a performer to express herself or himself more clearly.
I graduated from University of Miami with a B.Music Education, with emphasis on jazz piano. I performed with the Tampa Bay Symphony at age 17. I have taught students from age 4 to adults in every style. Using both group and private lesson methods, including the unique Mayron Cole Method, my students learn not just proper technique, but the process of making their piano skills flow from true musical expression.
I have tutored and taught homeschool students and public school students through methods such as Saxon Math and Math-U-See in order to give students a comprehensive understanding of math concepts. I relate mathmatical problems to real-life examples and focus instruction on applying math vocabulary and strategies to the pre-algebra stage, and ensure that basics such as working with operations and fractions are foundationally sound.
My experience as an educator in both homeschool and public school settings allows me a unique perspective in tutoring reading skills. I have experience in both phonics and whole language styles of reading instruction.
As a pianist and music director I've worked with countless artists and singers as a co-writer, producer and songwriting coach. My credits include a second place finish for my song "Come My Way" in the 1996 MasterCard National Talent Search and an honorable mention for my song "Nothing Without Love" in the Mid-Atlantic Songwriters Contest in 2010.
I am trained in Project CRISS (Creating Independence through Student-owned Strategies), a national study skills program designed to help students identify and organize information in reading and research.
My experience as an educator in both homeschool and public school settings allows me a unique perspective in vocabulary. I use root word concepts to help students apply their own background knowledge to new vocabulary, as well as etymological (word study) practices. Knowing the Latin or Greek roots of a certain word leads to an understanding of many more words.
Trained by the Institute for Excellence in Writing - "Teaching Writing: Structure and Style" Course, which provides students with a step-by-step process to improve their writing in two ways:modeling good writers and using carefully designed formats to increase writing quality.

Very flexible and makes learning fun — I already see changes in my son's grades and it's been only 3 times since Allen has been tutoring him. Allen has a great demeanor and my son seems to connect extremely well with him. I am very pleased at my choice to have Allen tutor my 10th grader. ...
