My name is Sylviane. I am a licensed New York State elementary school teacher and have taught all subjects from kindergarten to fifth grade in New York City for many years. I have a masters degree in elementary science education and am a big proponent of hands-on activities. I recently retired from the New York City School system and moved to Florida. Teaching is my passion and I don't want to give it up. Tutoring appeals to me because it allows for a closer relationship with students and more insights in their learning process.

I am not only a teacher but also a mother of a dyslexic child and know from personal and professional experience the difficulties a child faces while overcoming reading problems as well as the difficulties parents face as they witness their child's frustration with reading. I am proud to report that my son graduated college. So I know there are happy endings.

Also, I recently received certification to teach ESL and specialized in coaching for the TOEFL. I tutored students in English before and decided to get certified in ESL. I come from an immigrant family and have seen my parents struggle with English and know the hurdles one must overcome to learn a new language during adulthood.

Compassion for your students and your discipline is crucial to be an efficient educator and I know I care.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a New York State license to teach elementary school for grades K-6. I am a retired school teacher and have taught in New York City for 15 years.

I hold a B.A. from The City College of New York and an M.S. from Brooklyn College

I love hands-on activities and so do my students

While a New York City School teacher, I encountered many students of English as a second language, therefore have a lot of experience with elementary school students who are not native speakers. New York City requires workshops in teaching ESL for every elementary school teacher in public schools.

At the beginning of 2010, I completed a certification to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages from TESOL Training International.

As an adolescent, I taught myself English and am familiar with the "quirks" of the English language from a foreign speaker's perspective. I am now a fluent speaker of English with no foreign accent.

I am fully equipped to teach English as a foreign language.

I am a fluent French speaker and can teach any aspects of the French language and culture. I understand the difficulties one faces when learning a foreign language and concentrate on removing these hurdles. A living language reflects current trends and therefore the French you learned in high school may not be quite the same language that is now spoken in the streets of Paris. You will find many English words in this Romance language.

Study Skills

I have found that study skills have been neglected especially at the elementary school level and this causes students prejudice. Therefore I have spent many teaching hours addressing study skills. I have found that the best students usually have the least study skills because they assimilate and understand information quickly and therefore have no use for study skills in the early grades. However, when the subjects get more demanding students need to develop a methodology to retain information.

Note taking, organization, and self-assessment are skills that can be developed. Students should have an intrinsic knowledge of their own learning style. That knowledge should be developed so that they study on their own.

Starting from scratch, Sylviane has really helped me to understand the language, worked with me on the pronunciation and improved my French vocabulary extensively. In addition, she is a very sweet, sincere and patient person. I am so excit ...
