I have more than 15 years of experience in tutoring students of all ages and levels of education from elementary to graduate school. I am most interested in changing the way my students perceive themselves when approaching math. Throughout the years, I have had the most rewarding experience when my students, besides turning their grades around, feel empowered to the point they become a math resource to their classmates. I take my classes very personally and work together with parents to identify my students' weakness areas. I am a strong believer that by giving tutoring a holistic approach, tutors are successful in changing students' views of life in the most important aspects, preparing them to face the future with more confidence. This is my approach.

To me every student is smart. If there is a difficulty, is because the fundamentals were not learned properly. Math is like building blocks. No new concept is totally independent but an extension of a previous one. Students should not memorize formulas but understand where formulas are coming from. In this process, the brain gets trained for future problem solving situations. When I work with Freshman and Sophomore students, I am conscious that I am actually preparing them for the SAT and other admission tests earlier than in their Junior year.

In terms of subjects, my expertise is in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics, Physics and Spanish. As I instill my methodology to my students' studying habits, they find themselves being able to develop concentration skills to a level of solving the problems without writing.

Spanish skills: Being a native from Peru, South America, my command of the Spanish language is impeccable. Not only because I am native but I always took special attention to learning the right grammar, vocabulary and spelling, excelling at all touching points where Spanish is used. I make learning Spanish a fun experience by connecting with my students on an effective way after evaluating their needs.

My major is Civil Engineering which adds to my extensive teaching experience. I started tutoring when I was 15. My students have stayed in touch after more than 20 years, being most of them successful professionals in various technical fields such as Engineering. My resume comprises my career accomplishments as International Marketing Director for a software company in the US, which provides me with strong analytic skills in order to approach my students' individual situation and craft the most effective studying plan that will help them reach levels of performance they didn't think capable of. This is my best reward. As teaching is one of my strongest passions, I would be delighted to make a difference in my students' professional careers. I enjoy teaching as much as I enjoy my Yoga practice, which is one of my hobbies.

Rachel and you hired me to help with a Modeling and Forecasting exercise. When I arrived and read your assignment instructions, these were clear as to your college professor's requirements that you should do the work on your own. On that moment, I told you that I could help you with specific questions pertaining the process but not in doing the assignment.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

The approach I give to this subject doesn't differ too much with that for other Algebra levels. Making sure students have the fundamentals of Algebra when assessment takes place during first lesson is my major concern. From there on is a matter of building up on new concepts. Building blocks is what Algebra is about.

Algebra 2

If the student does not have the fundamentals of Algebra, this is the moment to reinforce concepts before moving on with Algebra 2 syllabus. Important concepts such as quadratic functions and its applications in real world problems are covered in Algebra 2. Introduction to probabilities and statistics are also covered here. Concepts and Algebra properties learned in Algebra 1 are continuously applied in solving Algebra 2 problems. Algebra 2 is also a gateway to Pre-Calculus which makes this subject an interesting bridge to higher level math subjects.

Civil Engineering

My bachelor's degree is in Civil Engineering. I am currently tutoring Statics which is one of the most important courses in this career. For students to understand Dynamics and other advanced courses, a solid base in Statics is certainly needed.

Geometry

Geometry is one of my favorite subjects. I teach my students where formulas come from instead of just memorizing them. Application of Algebra concepts to solve Geometry problems are reviewed.

GMAT

GMAT is such an interesting and challenging test. Time is highly restricted and since it is a computer adaptive test, the test taker cannot move on with next question until an answer has not been submitted. It is a matter of time management and an strategic approach to questions. Math knowledge for the quantitative section, in which I can help, is not expected to be nothing more than High School level. Is reasoning in a logic way which takes you to the other side. I have successfully taken this test when applying to a top Business School, USC.

Marketing

I feel passionate about Marketing for its impact in organization's positioning in the marketplace at a global scale. Being an Engineer, I was hired by a technology company to direct their International Marketing operations. I executed this function with great success, managing an internal group of 13 people as well as public relations agencies in Mexico, Brasil, Saudi Arabia, Australia, New York and Los Angeles. The results, high profile press coverage in publications such as The LA Times, The Economist as well as foreign main newspapers and trade publications. Brand recognition and product positioning was also acquired in the various territories where the company operates. I attended UCLA Extension and obtained a Professional Designation in Marketing certification. I just graduated from USC Marshall School of Business with an MBA degree with concentration in Marketing.

Physics

As a civil engineer, I have taken various levels of Physics in college. I have helped HS students improve their grades in Physics, but more important, understand how Physics principles work in real-world situations. Formulas and graph interpretation become familiar and easy to understand in terms of deriving them.

Prealgebra

This is probably the most fundamental subject in Math. Students taking Algebra 2 will have to use properties learned in pre-algebra. I enjoy teaching this subject to make sure the basics are well learned. In addition, I have vast experience working with Middle and Elementary School students.

Precalculus

As a building block on Algebra 2, and prior to Calculus, this is an important subject for students who want to pursue a career in a technology or science field. I have vast experience tutoring Algebra 2 not only because I have hundreds of hours with this subject but because of my engineering background.

Public Speaking

My International Marketing career took me to attend several conferences around the world. Speaking engagements were very important for my event strategy so I am used to speak to audiences coming from three main vertical markets: Government (Education, Local, State and Federal Government), Financial Services and Healthcare. Within these main verticals I had to tailor my message according to government agencies and organizations in different countries. I delivered the speeches, either in English, Spanish or Portuguese.

SAT Math

Taking admission tests requires not only mastering the subject but also the test taking process. Setting a test taking strategy is crucial for success. In a test taking environment in which time is pressuring, being precise and fast at the same time requires training. SAT Math is one of my favorites.

Spanish

Teaching Spanish requires a methodology as any other subject. I also use correlation with the English language. I have vast experience helping students understand conjugation of verbs as well as the application of Spanish grammar rules. In addition, I am a native Spanish speaker proud of commanding a superior level of proficiency in this language, Castillian, as it is called in South America, where I am originally from.

Statistics

Statistics could be a puzzle to many students; however, when understood, it becomes fascinating. I have had the rewarding experience of tutoring college students in this subject who have been able to get through the semester with good grades. During my MBA studies, the Statistics courses I took were interesting, as we applied them to real-world situations, having worked on complex projects.

Study Skills

It is from my own student experience in undergrad and grad school that I learned what I teach my students in terms of study skills. Time Management, organization and learning methodologies are essential elements in my tutoring experience. I am a Civil Engineer, a background that helps with mental organization and analytic skills. My MBA studies certainly is recent example of mastering effective study skills!
