My name is Shannon, and I am 32-year-old fundraising professional and mother living in South Florida. I work at a private institution of higher education in Miami, and I am exclusively responsible for fund-raising from private foundations and philanthropic corporations. As the Associate Director for the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs, I spend much of my time generating proposals and grant applications which request support for the university's programs, students and research initiatives. I also meet in-person with foundation and corporate prospects, presenting verbal cases for support for the various needs of the university and its students. In addition to my full-time position as a fundraiser within the Division of Institutional Advancement, I work two days per week tutoring students in the university's Writing Lab. As a tutor in the Writing Lab, I am responsible for assisting students, the majority of whom are not native English speakers, in the development and editing of their written research and topic essay papers. Prior to arriving at the university, I spent seven years as the Grants Specialist at a large regional opera company based in Miami. I have been a creative, technical and persuasive writer for ten years.
In my personal life, I enjoy spending time with my two young children (6-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter) and involving myself with their extracurricular teams and activities. I am fortunate that my family, including mother, father, and two younger sisters, lives in South Florida as well. I can be found most Sundays, along with my children, my sisters and their families, enjoying a family dinner of homemade pasta and garden-grown salad at my parents' home. Additionally, I serve as Secretary on the Board of Directors for a South Florida-based domestic violence victims' service and support nonprofit. I enjoy shopping, crafting and event planning, and I am currently training for my second Fort Lauderdale A1A Half-Marathon.
