Homeschool parents - I am here to help you with your homeschooling needs whether it is selecting curriculum, teaching a class, conducting hands-on labs, or providing remedial or advanced instruction for exceptional students. I have 30 years of experience educating children in elementary and middle school grades, most recently teaching math and science at a Naples homeschool group and summer school program.

I have a B.S. in Elementary Education and an M.A. in Literature and the Arts and have taught in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Florida. I have a Florida teaching license for Elementary Education Grades K-6 and certification for Math Grades 5-9 and English Grades 5-9. Using current information on brain research and different learning styles, I individualize instruction for how the student learns best. I have worked with students diagnosed with various challenges - Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Dyslexia (reading), Dysgraphia (writing), and Dyscalculia (math), as well as students identified as gifted. They have been some of my best teachers in learning how the brain works and how to differentiate instruction to best meet different learning styles.

Learning needs to be fun! So I often include games, memorization tricks, illustrations, and hands-on activities to help students internalize information, not just memorize it for a test and then forget it afterwards. Tutoring is not just about acquiring information, but it is also boosting students' confidence so they experience success and believe they can achieve academically.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I studied Plato in graduate school and love reading the classics. My Masters Thesis was entitled, "Plato Goes to High School: Using the Socratic Method in Secondary Education." I often used a modified version of Socratic dialogue in the middle school language arts classes that I taught. My daughter attended a school in Minnesota that had a classical curriculum which included 4 years of Latin and Humane Letters.

Dyslexia

I have worked with students who have dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. While I am not an Exceptional Student Education (ESE) teacher, I have been a classroom teacher with a concern for students with learning disabilities. I have made referrals for students who were at the middle school level but were not properly diagnosed and, therefore, not serviced properly. I understand the school system and how to utilize an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and a 504 Plan for students who do not meet the Learning Disability criteria. Students with learning disabilities are often very intelligent but do not do well in a traditional classroom setting without accommodations. I try to make sure each student's educational strengths are acknowledged and needs are met.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have had teaching licenses in three states for K-6. Currently, I am licensed in Minnesota and Florida. I have taught in elementary and middle schools for 16 years and have worked with children in elementary through high school in volunteer positions for over 30 years.

English

Master's Degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Literature and the Arts.

Lead Language Arts teacher for 9 years in a private middle school.

Study Skills

As a teacher for over 16 years, I have seen firsthand that good study habits are essential for students to be academically successful. In fact, I tell my students if I had to make a choice between a student with less intellectual capacity but better study skills and work habits and another student with more intellectual capacity but poor study skills and work habits, I would choose the one with the better skills and work ethic any day. At our school, we teach specific study and work habits because they are so important for student success not only in school but in life.

Theatre

I have been the drama director at a private middle school for the last nine years. In that time, I produced 16 plays with the 8th grade class. I often wrote the script myself from a book we studied or modified purchased scripts to fit the students and our intended audience. Previous to that job, I was the director of a youth drama ministry using skits and mime to convey our message.

Just Great! — Darlene has been just great with my girls. When we met I told her their weaknesses and she made a workplan based on goals they could achieve in the period. She went through reading, writing, pronunciation bringing the girls to an everyday improvement. She really did a great job and you can surely say she loves teaching. ...
