Humorous tutor available for K-12 Math, English and Reading

I have been involved in tutoring and teaching ages from Pre-K to adult education in math and basic science since 1998. I have enjoyed helping children of all ages see how math and science can be fun and easy to learn.

I taught for several years in a program called "Little Scientists," engaging Pre-K through Second Graders in basic science lessons through both instruction and hands-on involvement. Styling the lessons more like Mr. Wizard's World rather than a more contemporary "Bill Nye"-like program, I tried to focus on the children learning the vocabulary, hearing the theory, then finding out for themselves how it applies in the real world.

Most of my tutoring experience in college came from our local Salvation Army after-school program. My students ranged from Third to Sixth Grade, and subjects ranged from math and science to reading comprehension and grammar.

School teaching was in Sixth Grade, covering all subjects. My classes were students who were "middle of the road" or below in their grades, and were trying to get that extra boost to Honor Roll level.

While my philosophy does lean towards the value of memorization, I do attempt to help students achieve it through interactive work, mnemonic devices and repetition of application, rather than straight-forward "flashcard" style memorization, allowing students to both memorize the appropriate information and simultaneously learn how to interpret and manipulate the material they're learning.

I look forward to working with more students in the future and help them master the subjects they struggle with.

SAT Math

I try to stress memorization not of the entire material, but of the absolute basics. If one can reproduce the building blocks that more complex math is built on, he or she can then easily extrapolate the more complex equations come test time.

I also believe in careful reading and stress time management. I've had to hand back too many bad grades that came not from a lack of understanding of the material, but missing minor mistakes (putting a minus sign instead of a plus etc).

Elementary Math

Elementary math is the foundation for all future mathematics. It is the building blocks upon which Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus are built. Proper application of basic mathematics combined with simple shorthand for basic skills and memorization of elementary equations and processes will allow a student to easily grasp more complicated concepts in math, as well as manipulate more complex equations faster without relying on calculators for everything.

Study Skills

Aside from being able to tutor in several different subjects, I have also helped students learn how to learn. Practice skills, careful reading, note taking and mnemonic devices are all skills that I believe any student can learn. Finding what environment works for the student is critical, as well as discipline.

Public Speaking

My guide to public speaking first revolves around four basics: Posture, Projection, Prose and Polish. Posture helps with breathing, stamina, confidence and how the audience views you. Projection of your voice helps capture attention and keep the audience interested in your words. Linear Algebra

This is one of my specialties. Linear algebra is one of the simplest subjects to advance to once the basics of math are mastered.

While I always stress memorization of the basics, at this level I do allow my students to employ "shorthand" to remember certain equations or extrapolate more complex equations needed for tests.
