Dear Prospective Students,

I have a total of 25 years of teaching experience in the northwest suburbs. My background is quite unusual because I taught grades 3 through 8, substituted for several years in high school, and have tutored students in grades 4-12 since 1995. I instinctively know what kinds of reading, grammar, writing, and study skills you are weak/strong in just by working with you. My students will frequently say that what I tell them about their skills is identical to what their classroom teachers have said. For thirteen years I taught 7th and 8th grade reading/lit comp gifted classes.

The bulk of my outside tutoring is with high school ACT test preparation. In the last several years I have also had former students who are now college come to me to ask for help in writing papers, in taking lecture notes, and in organization for taking quizzes/tests. They email me or tell me personally that they wish they would have known the things I show them before they went to college.

I show my students patience, and in our sessions, I switch up the learning so it's not the a complete session of the same thing over and over. Many of my students tell me that they definitely learned new skills and techniques which they really do use right away in class or in completing large projects. I believe this because their parents will also tell me this!

I want my students to succeed in whatever they are trying to do. I am on their side. I think this comes through in every session. You also should know that I don't waste time in my tutoring sessions. Turn off your cell phone or Blackberry! You or your parents are paying for these sessions, so you and I must make the most of that time.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

We will review all grammar/punctuation/usage for the test as well as complete rhetorical skills. Strategies and test hints will be presented.

ACT Reading

I offer two methods of instruction for reading passages. Type of question breakdown is taught as well as test distractors.
