I have been tutoring wonderful students of all ages for four years now. I am highly math and science oriented, but I push my students to excel in all subjects. I charge the same rate for groups or individuals – and you get your money’s worth out of every visit. I love preparing notes prior to lessons, giving and grading homework for those who need it, and devoting my free time to studying. I focus on punctuality, reliability, and preparation. Students need connection - I always edit papers and answer homework questions for free.

I was a student at St. Petersburg Collegiate High School and I received my high school diploma and Associate's in Arts simultaneously. I graduated with a 4.63 high school GPA - and carry a 3.7 overall college GPA. I have taken more than 130 college credit hours in varieties of science, computational, and math courses. I graduated from USF in December 2012 (at age 20) with my BA in chemistry/biochemistry and a minor in mathematics. I am taking a short break from higher education to prepare applications for medical school. I also volunteer for Pinellas County Health & Community Services.

My Wyzant hours reflect only a portion of the students that I tutor throughout Pinellas County.

I am young but experienced - I have been tutoring professionally since I was 16! I tutor algebra, geometry, and precalculus often enough that I no longer need a textbook to help a student. I push mental math and steer my students away from the calculator. I also regularly prepare students for the SAT/ACT tests.

I have my own SAT/ACT worksheets that have shown results. I have developed the curriculum based on my experiences with high school students to focus on areas of weakness as well as major concepts presented in the SAT/ACT tests. With my worksheets and guidance, I have seen improvements of 200 points on the SAT and 5 points on the ACT. I am proud to say that the majority of my students have increased their scores after 6+weeks of tutoring. Some have received scholarships that far outweighed the cost of tutoring.

I have experience with ESOL students, IEP’s, ADD, ADHD, and gifted children. I have hundreds of workbooks, textbooks, and k-12 supplies that I use to help reinforce education.

I should note that my mother is a high school honors chemistry teacher and I have matured amongst textbooks and documentaries - both of my parents tutored their way through college, and now my brother and I do the same. My family often communicates about different tutoring techniques and styles, and we have endless resources. I am constantly updated on the newest state standards and grade-level requirements - and I am well networked with PCSB staff.

My history

I began tutoring elementary school children when I was part of the Kiwanis Key Club in 2006. We had a program called Read and Lead where I guided a second grade class through writing assignments. I assisted the teacher as the day came to a close so that she could leave on time, and I learned what children look for in an instructor. In college I started privately tutoring three ESOL children in English and writing. I have been tutoring them for five years now and we have moved beyond language arts. I used to love ending lessons with math and science facts, but now we often commit the entire tutoring period to a laboratory experiment or interesting math tricks. I love that I am able to share my zeal for subjects with children who haven’t had the chance yet to do the usual “I can’t stand math” routine.

As a tutor, I want most to help others appreciate how fascinating math and science are. During my sophomore year in college – my senior year in high school - my chemistry professor saw that I was helping other students with organic chemistry notes and he requested that I volunteer in the Academic Resource Commons as a tutor. During my final semester in high school I tutored adults who were often much older than me in subjects I loved. I thought it would be intimidating, but I found that my passion for the subjects helped make my elders comfortable with both the subject and our age difference.

My absolute favorite subjects to tutor are math and science. When I tutor math, I am always surprised by how many people haven't been taught what makes math beautiful and relevant. Equations and patterns are everywhere, especially in nature and finance. Math is the universal language - the numbers are only a tool we use to understand and quantify our world. In schools, instructors are confined solely to teach “subjects” and prepare for standardized testing. Tutoring is thrilling because I can share the fascinating ways that different classes are related. I have an extensive background in college science and math classes so I have the foundation to share how physics, calculus, biology, and chemistry come together.
