As a full-time high school teacher in Cape Coral, I have helped numerous students achieve their personal goals for graduation and college. Students who have not been able to pass the FCAT Reading were able to pass the ACT with an 18 or the SAT with a 440 in critical reading, and graduate from high school. Imagine their relief! Four tutoring and school students of mine were recruited for football by such schools as Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and University of South Alabama. Two are still seniors, but two are already college freshmen succeeding on the field and in their studies.
I am certified in English, Reading, ESOL and Business. I teach yearbook and new media as well. I hold certifications in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Dreamweaver.
When working with high school students on ACT or SAT prep, I use my own materials and any you may have. WE do practice tests, score them just like the ACT scores them, and go over each question individually to analyze what the question is asking you to do, why the right answer is right, and why the wrong options are wrong. We work on key vocabulary words, based on my custom list of the 180 words that show up most frequently. I will teach you the seven types of reading question types and how to decode and eliminate the wrong answers based on the question type. We will talk about the percentage of each specific type of question and determine your strengths. I work by boosting your strengths as well as filling in knowledge gaps. As we all know, some of the success in standardized testing is being a good test-taker. This CAN be learned. I have many, many strategies, tips and tricks that make hard questions easy for you.
We typically work together for two to three weeks starting at least four weeks before your test date. It is wise, however, to work together as soon as you know you are going to take the ACT or SAT. I can get you started with a study schedule and guidelines, meet every other week for a few months, and then work between two and three times a week for the two to three weeks nearest the test date. Certainly, we both work together to determine the best schedule for you. Even one session to get you on the right track.
