My name is Quintina and I enjoy helping people overcome obstacles to become their best selves. I understand that school can be tough at times, and my goal is to find customized, creative ways to help you/your student(s) understand and retain the information that you/they need to learn.
I earned my B.A. in International Studies from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland in 2005. During my undergraduate years, I had the opportunity to study abroad in South America and Northwestern Africa for three semesters, and the cultural experience amplified my understanding of my studies. I earned my M.A. in Expressive Therapies with a specialization in Mental Health Counseling from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2010. I have extensive academic writing experience, including undergrad and graduate theses. I have indulged my love of creative writing since childhood and in 2012, my first book of poetry was published.
I have interned and worked in the therapy field with children from ages 4 through 19 as well as their families over the last 5 years, and I understand the variety of forces that can impact students' success in school. In light of this, I would like to particularly reach out to students and parents that have academically struggling students who are also battling ADD/ADHD, anxiety, low self-esteem, and/or major life stress, and offer you the opportunity to have a one-on-one empowering tutoring experience. I believe that everyone has the ability to learn; we simply must find a strategy that engages the way in which a student's mind absorbs and conceptualizes information best and at their level. I look forward to helping you or your child start your journey to making your academic challenge your triumph.
I have a Master's Degree in Expressive Therapies with a specialization in Mental Health Counseling from Lesley University. I interned throughout both years of graduate school in Massachusetts with children and teens with a variety of mental health issues,and I supported elementary school students at homework time during my second internship at a therapeutic after school program. In addition to these hundreds of internship hours, I also engaged in therapy with youth and their families for nearly three years after receiving my Master's degree. Over the years, I have grown to understand how a variety of mental health issues such as ADD/ADHD as well as other external stresses can negatively affect students' academic performance and make learning difficult. I have a great deal of patience, an optimistic perspective, and a strong desire to help students with challenges, including ADD/ADHD, to find creative strategies to work around their particular struggles instead of being defeated by them. One of the ways in which I would work with students with ADD/ADHD is to break studying sessions down into 15-30 minute sections with a break in between to accommodate the shorter attention span. Other techniques I would use are to incorporate things that the student enjoys into the study session while relating them to the topic when possible, to change the location of the session at times (i.e. directly outside the home instead of inside with parent permission), to allow the student to have a stress ball or similar device when engaging in studying, and to incorporate opportunities for movement during the session (i.e. quizzing student on spelling words while standing and changing places when they miss a word). I believe that with effort from the students themselves as well as effective support,guidance, and empowerment around them, students can transform their challenges into triumphs.
