I have always loved learning. It came so easily to me. I was fortunate to have had my experience work that way. I think that learning can be easier for many students today and I can help. I am patient, fun, creative and dedicated. I think that, sometimes, we learn best when we don't even know we are learning. I enjoy watching the world open up to a student who doesn't have that joy in regular school life.
My recent experience has involved setting up a Life Skills Program in Africa, working with young girls at risk. Developing the program for this group of girls reminded me of how much I enjoy helping someone learn. Small accomplishments, achieved through calm and supportive tutoring sessions, can totally change the way a student manages in school. I ran summer camps for kids in a family business for 26 years. I taught cooking, weaving, beading, sewing and many other arts. Most campers ranged in age from 7-16. I enjoy the challenge of finding what is standing in the way of learning and working to find another route to the end. I don't give up easily and I would have been happy to have someone like myself as a tutor if I needed one.
I am tenacious when I tackle a project. I will stick with it until I figure it out. This is the same attitude with tutoring. We will keep working until we get the problem conquered. There are many different ways to go about the same problem-many different methods to get to the same end. I don't like to give up and I think my ability to find a method that works will be of great value to any student. Most of all, I love watching the light bulb go on. I love sharing the moment when everything clicks. I look forward to many of those moments.
I believe that my attitude towards tutoring comes from the merging of the characteristics of my most favorite teachers from my early years in school. These teachers taught me to love learning, love teaching, love reading, and love sharing these interests.
My college degree is a BA in Social Psychology with minors in Criminal Justice and Education. I have taught in summer tutorial camps, specifically for reading and math. My preferred age for tutoring is kindergarten through fourth or fifth grade. I am also very comfortable with ESOL and enjoy the challenge of working with speakers of other languages.
