"Make success unavoidable!" These three words convey not only the foundation of my own educational philosophy
, but also what should be the most essential responsibility of any educator in any setting. Yet, as simple as it appears to be, the concept of success, and the application of it to each individual student, is the most daunting but rewarding challenge any educator faces. For in order for each student to achieve at the highest level, each must be recognized as a unique individual with his or her own distinct set of skills, talents and weaknesses. The best educators discount the "one-size-fits-all" approach and tailor their lessons to meet each of their learner's needs, acknowledging that each student acquires knowledge and skills in his or her own way and at his or her own pace.
My name is Julie; I am a twice-nominated teacher-of-the-year candidate and former educator with a combined fifteen years of classroom experience at both the secondary and the undergraduate level. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science
Education and Political Science, and I am halfway through my Master's in European History
. I also have completed all coursework for my gifted education endorsement,and have served as a gifted adviser/coordinator in the public school system. While I spent the majority of my career teaching middle and high school social science classes, I also founded and coached a nationally-recognized, award-winning forensics and debate program. Most recently, I had the opportunity to work at the undergraduate level, teaching World History
as a graduate assistant at Florida Atlantic University. Primarily responsible for guiding students through the research and writing
process required to complete the course, I was exposed to the multitude of students who lacked the necessary critical reading
, research, and writing skills needed to achieve both short and long-term success at the college level. This experience provided me with the impetus to begin a new phase of my career - a phase in which I could work one-on-one with my students to provide them with the tools and strategies necessary to achieve the highest level of success in any classroom at any level.
Combining my own professional knowledge, training, and experience, I will develop a personalized program to improve and enhance your student's abilities to read and think critically, study productively, research effectively, and write for a specific purpose, with clarity, conciseness, and depth; we will also address study skills
, and which of these skills best fits your student's individual needs. We'll begin by determining your student's most effective learning styles and interests, then tailor all lessons to best fit those styles and interests. These lessons will create a foundation of tools that the student can apply in any language
-based class, whether it be English
, science, or social science, at either the secondary or undergraduate level. Lessons are very student-centered, and both the student and the parent will have a role in the creation and application of the program as a whole
While I can concentrate specifically on providing an individualized college-prep approach, I can also provide specific subject-area assistance in any social science or English class, math
(up to and including Algebra
II), and Spanish
(I-III), having tutored these subjects at different times over the course of my career; I can also provide college entrance exam preparation. And as a former forensics and debate coach whose students have won a variety of events at national-level tournaments, I can also help students prepare for local, regional or national tournaments in all areas of competition.
