Randy has 30 years of real world experience helping business and commercial publishers improve their production operations for print, web and mobile media, with more than 20 years of that experience in helping publishers, printers and design professionals use computerized design and production tools. Over that time he has learned a lot about what does – and doesn't – work in a successful digital publishing environment.

Like many publishing professionals, Randy has expanded his skills to include tools and skills to leverage traditional content into new areas, including web, video and multimedia/digital publication production. As tools and techniques have been refined, Randy has developed more sophisticated and efficient solutions for making the most from legacy content and enhancing its presentation in new media.

Through his experiences as a trainer, industry consultant and publishing professional, Randy has acquired expert knowledge and experience in many print production programs, including Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat; QuarkXPress and specialized prepress applications. He also has expert knowledge and experience in Adobe Acrobat with regards to digital prepress, presentation and coordination/review issues. Through his training experience, Randy also has advanced knowledge in using Acrobat as a multimedia platform and as a forms creation tool. Randy is also an experienced online presenter using Acrobat Connect and other telepresence presentation and demonstration platform. Randy’s developed a marketable practice in not only presenting online himself, but helping others do those presentations themselves effectively, engagingly and efficiently.

Randy’s training experience has also given him a working knowledge of Adobe Dreamweaver and Flash for online design and production, as well as functional skills with Adobe's video production tools.

An Adobe Certified Expert since 1999, Randy also is an original member of Adobe Systems' Consultant/Adobe Professionals group, and is among the first trainers in the country to receive the company's prestigious Adobe Education Trainer certification. I hate to date myself, but I've been using and training clients on this program since the Illustrator '88 version was introduced. I've been using InDesign since its first version in 1999 and working with Photoshop when version 2.5 was introduced in 1992.

For what it's worth, I passed WyzAnt's qualification tests for all three programs with flying colors, scoring 100 percent on all three qualification tests. I hold Brainbench Master Certifications in Adobe Illustrator and Mac OSX; and Brainbench certifications in QuarkXPress, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Windows OS.

I'm also among the first teachers in the U.S. to earn certification as an Adobe Education Trainer, and I know my stuff. I can help you learn how to use Illustrator to do what you want to do with it.

Adobe InDesign

Randy has been working with various page layout solutions, including Aldus/Adobe PageMaker, QuarkXPress as well as Adobe InDesign since 1986. As a publishing professional, he headed the first weekly newspaper in the United States to use PageMaker on Windows PCs, and helped Adobe develop both PageMaker and InDesign through several prerelease beta test cycles.

Photography

Randy's photo skills were developed through his work as an award-winning newspaper reporter/photographer and editor. Those experiences taught him not only how to frame the right shot with the camera, but also how to work with the image he saw in the viewfinder and turn it into a compelling and communicative shot for publication.

As photography moved from film to digital reproduction, Randy moved with it, learning how to use Adobe Photoshop to retouch and create digital images for news, product and portrait photos. He teaches students not only how to take the right shot, but also how to make the most of that shot after the picture has been acquired.

Proofreading

Randy is an experienced writer, editor and proofreader, with more than 30 years in the journalism, technical and educational writing fields.

He has worked as a copy editor and as a production/design editor on a wide range of pieces for print, internet and mobile publishing. Randy is fast, efficient and accurate.

Randy has worked as both an effective editor and efficient proofreader. He understands the difference between editing for content and clarity early in the editorial process and proofreading to fix minor, but egregious, errors at the end of the production process.

In either case, he respectfully understands it's important for a writer's voice to be heard through the copy. It's more important words reflect the writer's style than the editor's way to portray a story.
