I think I bring an unusual approach to teaching ESL to adults. I taught both high school and college English. I became a newspaper journalist for more than 20 years, wrote three novels, and worked as a writer promoting a community college and a research university. I also lived overseas, struggled to learn a new language, and kept my family together through stressful times. I taught my own children English, so I learned how to simplify and build from there. I’m developing an intuitive approach to teaching ESL to adults, focusing on what an individual needs in any moment. I’ll definitely teach grammar, syntax, rhythm, and music of English along with the meanings of words and phrases. We always work on idioms—the crazy way we Americans say things, known as expressions and sayings. Every language has them, and they can be key to understanding Americans.

Using such techniques as underlining key words and phrases and learning vocabulary through storytelling, I help students gain a deeper understanding of what they're reading. I don't tell students what something means; I guide them to find the meaning for themselves so they acquire methods and confidence in their abilities.
As a professional writer and trained English teacher, I excel at teaching good writing. I work with each student to determine his/her strengths and weaknesses in writing, and then we begin to overcome weaknesses and build on strengths so that students can produce strong, clear essays.
I have taught many adult students in ESOL and tutored a student in reading comprehension and writing for his graduate level courses in the United States.
After thirty years of teaching and tutoring English and writing professionally, I've become familiar with most words in the English language. I've tutored many students in vocabulary, especially for test preparation. I also teach ESL, which requires me to explain what words mean in fairly simple language and also how to use those words.
