I began my career teaching high school and college English and was then bitten by the "journalism bug." I became a newspaper and magazine journalist, winning awards and knocking everybody's socks off. Eventually I returned to my first love, education. As a writer, I promoted higher education in the public relations and marketing department at Palm Beach State College and Florida Atlantic University. Along the way, I often tutored high school students struggling with English--grammar, vocabulary, reading, and the most difficult of all: writing. Part of that tutoring involved preparing students for the SAT.
Tutoring high school students taught me something, too. I found that I have the ability to take a student's ideas about a topic and show them how to articulately express them in written words. I can make studying vocabulary words fun by telling stories you won't forget about a word's meaning. (Ask me about "anachronism.")
This year I published two novels on Amazon and a humorous cookbook. As the mother of a son and daughter, I learned how to be sensitive to their perspectives, and I bring that with me to every tutoring session.
I've taught ACT English preparation in private tutoring sessions and have a B.A. in English. A former English teacher, I've also taught college English and am a professional writer. My articles as a journalist and a writer in public relations and marketing for higher education has won me numerous awards.
As a former high school and college English teacher, I've often tutored students in reading comprehension to prepare for the ACT and SAT. I have a fun way to help students remember the meanings of words so that vocabulary isn't such a stumbling block.
I have a bachelor's degree in English and have taken numerous graduate courses in English, journalism, and communications. After teaching high school and college English, I became a professional writer, working as a journalist and later in public relations for higher education. I have published two novels.
I think I bring an unusual approach to teaching ESL to adults. I taught both high school and college English. I became a newspaper journalist for more than 20 years, wrote three novels, and worked as a writer promoting a community college and a research university. I also lived overseas, struggled to learn a new language, and kept my family together through stressful times. I taught my own children English, so I learned how to simplify and build from there. I’m developing an intuitive approach to teaching ESL to adults, focusing on what an individual needs in any moment. I’ll definitely teach grammar, syntax, rhythm, and music of English along with the meanings of words and phrases. We always work on idioms—the crazy way we Americans say things, known as expressions and sayings. Every language has them, and they can be key to understanding Americans.
I am a former middle school and high school English teacher, and I have been a professional writer, editor, and proofreader for the last twelve years. My grammar, therefore, is impeccable, and I can explain grammar rules with clarity.
When I was a college relations and marketing specialist at Palm Beach State College, I often wrote speeches for the President and members of the Board of Trustees. I also attended a two-day intensive seminar in San Francisco for speech writing. In addition, I have spoken publicly on numerous occasions.
Using such techniques as underlining key words and phrases and learning vocabulary through storytelling, I help students gain a deeper understanding of what they're reading. I don't tell students what something means; I guide them to find the meaning for themselves so they acquire methods and confidence in their abilities.
As a professional writer and trained English teacher, I excel at teaching good writing. I work with each student to determine his/her strengths and weaknesses in writing, and then we begin to overcome weaknesses and build on strengths so that students can produce strong, clear essays.
After thirty years of teaching and tutoring English and writing professionally, I've become familiar with most words in the English language. I've tutored many students in vocabulary, especially for test preparation. I also teach ESL, which requires me to explain what words mean in fairly simple language and also how to use those words.
Writing is my greatest strength as a professional writer and teacher. I am an award-winning journalist and have worked in public relations and marketing for higher education. In addition, I recently published two novels.
I thoroughly enjoy helping students write with clarity and finesse, and they often call me years later to thank me for helping them succeed in high school and college.
Great SAT tutor! — During the tutoring sessions, Ms. W helped me find the best test taking strategy for my personal test taking ability. She helped me with everything: reading comprehension, grammar, sentence structure, etc! One thing I especially liked was when we wrote a practice SAT essay together. I enjoyed walking through the whole process of brainstorming, writing, etc! Also, it seems like Ms. W knows every w ...
