I have a Masters degree in Elementary education and have done work on a Masters in reading and a Masters in English as a second language. I have worked as a substitute teacher and a math and reading tutor for third and fourth grade students. I am also certified in Special Education in Delaware.
I believe that students will learn more while having fun. I try to make every lesson involved for the students. That could mean they pick the book we read, or we move around while we learn. I try to include visual, hearing, kinetics or touch in all of my lessons. I do not like reading and then answering questions about it very much, that can be boring and the child does not learn very much about what we are studying that well. I also believe every child can learn, they may just learn in a different way.
I am very easy going and patient. I have never met a child I did not like. At times it seems as if children are drawn to me. My husband and I were traveling to see family, when we had a lay over in one of the airports a mom and her daughter had been traveling for some time. The mom was really tired and the daughter came over and stood by me, looking at me as the students do when I am subbing. I very simply asked if she needed anything, she said no. I pulled some of the children's books on Thanksgiving that I had with me and we read them together. Even though she was not of the age to be reading, I let her "read" a book to me by looking at the pictures and making up the story as she did.
