I have recently finished my masters in teaching English Language Learners, so I have a firm grasp of learning strategies and learner profiles. For over twenty years, I have worked with students from this country and from many international and multi-cultural backgrounds in classrooms, as a private tutor and in small groups. I have taught and tutored English, Spanish, language arts, science, history, and financial literacy. My favorite topics are writing and literature, and I specialize in building grammar skills for different genres of writing. I do my best to make learning engaging and fun, and expect students to commit themselves to reaching their full potential.

Writing

What you must realize about writing is how to use to achieve your desired result. Writing can be so much fun, especially when you play your strengths and cover your weaknesses. Everyone can write, and everyone should be constantly improving their writing skills. You don't "arrive" in writing, you are always "on your way". And, it's an adventure every step of the way!

English

English can be a tedious bore to many students, but it doesn't have to be. As I grow older my appreciation for the subject increases. Having a firm grasp of English allows us to improve our communication channels, and to expand our learning skills. Then comes creativity! Join me to discover the joys of English!

ESL/ESOL

When I was studying for my Bachelor's degree, I learned never to use the student's native language to teach English. Since then, I have adjusted my beliefs on this point. In my Master's studies, we explored ways to help students become successful learners. My goal is to help students find their most effective learning strategies, so that they learn how to learn using all the resources available to them.

Literature

The best thing about literature is how it affects our interactions with with the world and with each other. I enjoy the classics, not only American and European, but also a few mostly South Asian choices. My favorite is children's literature. If I don't have a fact in my head, I will find the answer through research.

Proofreading

Learn the POWER of proofreading! We will identify areas of weakness in your writing, and you will learn the tricks to strengthening them. I will teach you how you can adjust your writing style based on the purpose of your piece. You will improve your writing steadily as we work together, so that you can be a powerful communicator in the workplace or at school.

TOEFL

I can help you prepare for the TOEFL! I will help you evaluate your study materials, plan out your study program, get ready for the listening and speaking sections, and answer any questions you may have about the test procedure. Taking the TOEFL is a big challenge, and I can help you face the challenge with confidence.

Study Skills

I learned study skills as part of my teacher training. Later, I have had a variety of experiences that helped me put the skills into practice. I worked with the learning resource teachers in two schools (middle school level) to build individualized learning plans for students with special needs. We also worked in a team that taught all students how to study and to optimize their learning styles. Everyone can learn, and it can really be enjoyable. Let's figure it out together!

Bible Studies

I studied Bible and religious studies all through school, and went to Christian colleges. Then I married a pastor and I take an active role in his work, including teaching the adult Sunday study class. I also audited several courses at the seminary, and have continued personal Bible study for many years. I believe the Bible is our guide to living a Godly life, not to mention its value as superb literature.
