Hi! I've been teaching for thirty-four years and love it! I have two B.S. degrees, one in Elementary Education and one in Special Education. I also have a Master's degree in Elementary Education. I have taught every grade from first to sixth in New York City, Pennsylvania and Delaware, and am familiar with many reading, math and writing programs. I think learning should be fun! I also believe that, as the teacher, it is my job to come up with as many ways to teach a concept as is needed until your child understands it.
I am specially trained to work with children with ADD, ADHD, Asperger's and other learning differences and have done so successfully throughout the years. The special education programs in the Delaware Public Schools rely mostly on remediation. I know that the key to success for a child with special needs is not to treat them as if they're slow, but to teach them compensating methods so that they are able to perform as effectively as their classmates.
I began and headed up a Resource Room in a private school in Delaware when first moving here. However, I have done most of my teaching in a general class setting, mainstreaming special needs students with my other students.
I have also been a lead teacher, grade leader and teacher trainer in the NYC public schools as well as in the Christina School District in Delaware.
Let's talk and see if my experience matches your child's needs!
I have an undergraduate degree in Special Education of learning differences, emotional difficulties and Asperger's/Autism. Not only have I started and run a Resource Room in a private school, I have taught mainstreamed special needs children in every one of my classes for twenty-seven years. I have also taught student teachers and rookie teachers how to recognize and work with special needs students.
I have been working with students with Asperger's for over twenty seven years. My second undergraduate major was in Learning and Behavior Differences and Asperger's. I was the teacher always chosen for mainstreamed students with Asperger's, due to my background.
I have two Bachelors of Science degrees; one in Elementary Education and the other in Special Education--Learning Differences and Autism from the State College at Buffalo, which is renowned for their Exceptional Education department. There, I was taught specific modalities to help children with dyslexia find the best compensating skills for themselves, so they can read more fluidly and efficiently. I use verbal, written and kinesthetic approaches so I can determine how each child learns best. Using that knowledge, and the student's IEP (if one is available), I prepare lessons that will not only bring the student up to grade level, but will teach them the compensating skills they need to become a lifelong learner.
I have two Bachelor of Science degrees-one in Elementary Education and the other in Special Education. I also have a Master of Science degree in Urban and Multicultural Education. I have taught in both public and private schools for thirty-two years and hold teaching certifications in New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New York City. I have also been deemed "highly qualified" under No Child Left Behind.
During my thirty-two years in the classroom, I taught math in grades one through six and used several different math programs. At P.S. 197 in New York City I was also a teacher trainer in math. I was a terrible math student in elementary school, so I became determined to make it fun and understandable as a teacher!
I have taught all forms of reading programs. However, I used phonics with all of them, as I think it helps children read more fluently. This is especially true in the lower grades. Using phonics as a teaching tool with children who are a grade level or more behind helps them to strengthen their reading skills and bring them up to grade level or beyond.
I have taught reading in every grade from first through sixth. I also have a special education degree and have worked extensively with children with learning disabilities and Asperger's. I have tutored students, both one-on-one and in small groups, to help them improve their decoding, fluency and comprehension skills.
I have an B.S. in Special Education and have begun Resource Room programs as well as had children with PDD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) mainstreamed into my classroom for over thirty years. Working with children with autism is something that is very close to my heart.
I start teaching study skills as early as second grade. We begin by reading an interesting paragraph. Then, as a class, we decide what information is important in the paragraph and use an outline to list that information. We also discuss why one bit of information is worthy of being included in the outline as opposed to another bit of information. As the year progresses, we use the same strategy in small groups and finally as individuals. I use the same process when tutoring one on one.
I have also taught students, both as a class and individually, how to organize their notes, homework, etc., suggesting tools that will help as well as ways to remember assignments, etc.
Excellent tutor - highly recommend — Susan is an excellent tutor for my daughter who is high functioning autistic and her years of experience working with kids on the spectrum have been critical to her helping my daughter catch up to her peers in mathematics and overcoming her anxiety when it comes to other assignments, such as writing paragraphs. I can really see an improvement in my daughter's approach to these subjects as she has ...
