I am a licensed, certified Business Education teacher with 20+ years of experience. I have taught middle school, high school and adult students, in both individual and class settings. I enjoy teaching general computer skills along with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. My best qualities are my kindness and patience. In addition to MS Office, you will learn how to navigate the Internet, create an email account and add attachments by downloading files. We can create folders for files, transfer files using a flash/jump drive. I can help you with your printer copying, printing or faxing documents. You will know how to use CDs and DVDs for music or shows. You will also get to know YouTube to watch current events. We may install programs (or games such as Solitaire and other mind games) on your local hard drive. We will discuss networking: LAN's, WAN's and other network features such as an IP address and why we have them.
I enjoy showing students how to the "function" key (take totals, averages, highs and lows) for a column or a string of numbers. It's fun to see their faces when the answer pops up so quickly. I especially enjoy creating charts and graphs, making sure the correct columns of data are set up and then choosing colors and styles to impress!
In addition, using the "sort" and "filter" features, students quickly learn how to get information in the format that they are looking for. This is a feature many office workers enjoy.
MS Power Point is software that helps you create a slide presentation. This is the place to be creative, yet organized.
You will learn how to create a slide, add a slide, insert bullet points, insert pictures or clipArt, and add color and change font size and style.
Adding movement to the slide show means adding "Custom Animation" (or having bullets slide in one at a time) and "Slide Transition" (having one slide "dissolve" into the next slide). You may turn on an auto-timer so that the slide show plays continuously without monitoring it, or just leave at normal and change slides using the mouse, space bar or arrow keys.
You will also learn how to print handouts using the text from your presentation--either with just the pictures of the slides, or with three slides on the left and lines for your notes on the right.
*You may also want to create a brochure to go with your presentation. If so, this can be created in MS Publisher or MS Word. Let me know in advance if you are also interested in this feature.
MS Word is a powerful word processor. In school it is mainly used for research papers. In this case, students learn how to add automatic page numbering, automatic "running titles," turn on double spacing and change margins. In addition, the use of tables, short-cut keys, and adding clip art, photos and/or graphs from Excel are also included as one becomes more advanced.
I teach according to the National Business Standards for business documents. While teaching business letters or personal letters, students may want to try out the "Mail Merge" feature: Create a form letter, create a "database" of names and addresses, and click a button to create a letter for each name to personalize the form letter to family and friends (most often used for the family Christmas letters).
There are many other features that can be used; you will have to be specific with your request.
I taught piano lessons for six years while taking beginner to intermediate piano lessons for 12 years. I used the Thompson, Schawm and "Finger Power" books and was teaching up to 21 students at one point. My advanced teacher was an instructor at the University of Delaware and entered me in the University's program when I was a sophomore in high school. I played three pieces for a panel of judges: "Puppet's Complaint" by Cesar Franck, "Minuet and Trio" by Mozart, and "Sea Piece" by Edward MacDowell. I was awarded an A-, A and B+ respectively (at the college level). My grand finale before leaving music lessons was "Fantasie Impromptu" by Chopin which I played as the "senior solo" during the Spring Music Concert. In addition to piano, I played the tenor sax in marching band, concert band and jazz band all four years in high school. I did go on to gain my bachelors in teaching; however, due to the lack of potential music teaching positions, I chose not to pursue music education. I am a certified, licensed business and computer applications teacher - a position from which I have retired after 20 years of teaching. I taught my own children how to play the piano, flute and alto sax. I still play the piano for pleasure and accompany singers during the holidays. I read notes, know chord progressions, scales, major vs. minor, and the major music marks of phrasing and expression. My background is mostly classical; however, I did learn contemporary and jazz while playing in the jazz band.
