I love to learn, and I love to teach. One of the best things about teaching and tutoring is getting to take what you know, and bring it alive for others as you explore it together. I'm the sort of person who sees something on a billboard, hears something on the radio, or notices something in the distance, then goes home to look it up, and gets lost reading all about the different ideas I find.
I have extensive experience working with kids of all ages, as well as kids with developmental disorders and special needs. I taught English for a year in Japan, and have experience teaching Sunday and Bible school, and coaching baseball. My philosophy on learning is that you have to have an interest to really understand, so I try to find ways to make topics relevant to student's lives.
I have a bachelor's degree from Bryn Mawr College, where I majored in East Asian Studies, as well as taking courses in history, education, literature, philosophy, computer programing, and psychology. I am also conversationally fluent in Japanese. I have band 4 TKT (teaching of English as a foreign language) certification from Cambridge University.
I have experience in particular teaching ESL and English literature to kids ages 14-16, and general ESL experience with people aged 6-42. I have taught Japanese to teens and adults. I have also worked with kids in grades 1-5 teaching about fitness, wellness, and environmental science at an inner city school in Wilmington. I came in in the middle of this program, and was able to contribute creative projects and activities to keep the kids engaged, and demonstrate our major points. In addition, I have worked with teens in mentoring children, and teaching. In the past, I have tutored in middle school mathematics and French. My student teaching time was spent in a seventh grade English classroom, helping with papers and reading. I am currently working as an ESL and Japanese teacher, and tutoring in first grade math, writing, and geography. I am also enrolled in the Masters of Elementary Education program at Wilmington University, which I should complete as of December 2013.
My work experience also includes food service, library science, translation, and financial information security.
I'm excited to meet new people and spend time learning and growing together!
