I am excited for the opportunity to tutor and have fun learning and growing with you!
I have extensive experience working with students in a variety of traditional and non-traditional settings. At the present time I volunteer with Delaware Greenways in their walking buddies program. I help plan and implement weekly outdoor nature-themed activities for students in grades K-5. Each session also includes nature journaling.
I also work part time at the Dupont Environmental Education Center in Wilmington as a teacher/naturalist. In this position I teach lessons covering a range of topics including biodiversity in the marsh, use of the five senses, how to search for animals in the marsh area, and activities relating to erosion and pollution, just to name a few! In this capacity I interact with people of all ages from young toddlers to adults.
I have a BA in English Literature from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. I enjoy reading to and with students: while pursuing my Literature degree I took classes in Childrens' Literature and participated in a bi-monthly read-aloud program in a local daycare center. I currently volunteer with Read Aloud Delaware by spending 1-1.5 hours a week reading to young children.
I recently returned from 2 years teaching ESL to elementary and junior high students in Sendai, Japan. While there I taught after school English classes using a curriculum which included songs, stories, chants and phonics instruction to teach English conversation skills. I taught classes of 20-26 students as well as provided some individual tutoring.
I also have considerable experience working with students in camp settings and have taught subjects such as Horsemanship and Animal Science for six years in such settings.
I am a past CHA (Certified Horsemanship Association) Instructor and have attended multiple certification clinics which focus on evaluation of teaching skills as well as horsemanship knowledge.
One of the things I most enjoy is watching someone come to understand a concept for the first time...seeing the light come on, and the connection be made. I am patient and enthusiastic about teaching and enjoy using games and creative activity to reinforce and practice new skills!
