I enjoy helping people of all ages to develop skills in science and math as well as in reading and writing. My training includes a B.A. in Biology and M.Ed. in Natural Science Education from University of Delaware, graduate courses in counseling and communications from Providence Seminary and Regent University, 24 years of classroom teaching in three schools, and extensive tutoring experience in southern Delaware. My students have come from a wide range of racial and cultural backgrounds, including Native American. This variety of exposure has equipped me to find the instructional methods that will work best for you. As the elderly fisherman says in The Old Man and The Sea, "There are many tricks." Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra 1 students in a small high school near Dover for the past year. They seemed to enjoy the insights and problem-solving strategies that I taught them. My area of training is science, of which mathematics is the language.

Algebra 2

I have several years experience teaching this subject in private schools. Depending on your needs, please note that I am also certified in precalculus, which often overlaps Algebra 2.

Biology

My teaching experience in this subject is 15 years. Most recently, my courses have focused on cell and molecular biology. However, I also enjoy teaching botany, zoology and ecology.

Chemistry

I have 12 years experience teaching this subject. I can do both lab and theory and have worked out procedures of my own which are often better than those in the textbook.

Geometry

Geometry was one of my favorite courses in high school. I discovered that I had a special affinity for the kind of logical reasoning needed in two-column proofs. For the past school year, I have been tutoring a number of high school students who were struggling with this and other areas of geometry.

Precalculus

I taught this subject two years at a private school. The topics covered were mostly material that I did in Algebra 2 in my youth: all kinds of basic functions, trigonometry, probability, etc.

Trigonometry

I have three years of experience teaching this subject, which was included in the precalculus or Algebra 2 courses in the schools where I taught. I look forward to helping out you or your student succeed with trigonometry.

English

My experience in English includes developing and teaching an ESL high school course; serving as editor and staff writer for a newsletter with global distribution; and composing and/or editing books and booklets for publication. My training includes graduate studies in communication. My high school English was capably taught by a published author.

Proofreading

My seventeen years of experience as editor of a newsletter with world-wide circulation gives me the background needed for teaching proofreading skills. If I ever get stuck, my Chicago Manual of Style stands ready to help.

Physical Science

I have 12 years experience teaching ninth grade level physics and chemistry, which made up the physical science course in the schools where I worked. I can help you or your student with this subject.

ASVAB

I have been helping young people in Sussex and Kent Counties, Delaware, to prepare for their ASVAB test. Usually we focus on tests included in the AFQT: Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning and Math Knowledge.
