I have worked with 3rd to 6th graders at the elementary level on science, math and reading skills. I have helped my students read at one grade level above the grade they are in and also similar to and often greater gains in their math level proficiency.

Phonics

Being an ESL tutor, I was taught how to teach phonics. Also being a teacher of German and having studied various foreign languages has given me a good grounding in the basics of phonics.

Study Skills

Being a tutor one needs to help students develop good study habits and organizational skills in order to be successful.
This grounding can be used in general study skills work.
Additionally, I have a PA Certification in Teaching, which included a course on Content Reading. A course that I've found to be extraordinary useful in my tutoring and has helped me teach students how to decode a textbook.

ESL/ESOL

I'm certified to teach ESL through the Literacy Volunteers in the Greater Wilmington area.

I have worked mostly with students from South America who were learning English as Second Language and they achieved the first level proficiency in English as a second language. Unfortunately, they moved out of the area and we could not finish the next level.
