Hi, and welcome to my page! I am currently majoring in Early Childhood Education and Second Language Studies (ELL) with a concentration in Chinese at Vanderbilt University. My main goal is to help your child develop a love for reading, writing, and math by making learning applicable and fun. I have had experience working in Montessori, Chinese Immersion, ESL, Special Education, and study abroad programs. As a previous Student Member on the Montgomery County Public Schools Curriculum Advisory Board, I am familiar with what is required of each grade level. I can help your child not only catch up, but go beyond what is required to open more doors of opportunity.
I look forward to speaking with you!
Algebra is highly applicable in daily life, and my job is to show your child how beneficial and useful it truly is. A typical lesson will include:
1. A video that introduces the concept/applies it in a tangible, useful manner
2. Explanation of concept and doing examples
3. Coming up with mnemonics, songs, or rhymes
4. Guided practice
6. Independent work
It is extremely important to me that the student not only understands how to do the problem, but why the method(s) taught work.
I have had my articles and essays published in Chinese newspapers. My parents are from China, and though I grew up speaking the language, I also have a strong command of teaching Chinese grammar and pronunciation. I have also interned at Potomac Elementary School's Chinese Immersion/Arts Integration program (K/1st Grade). I took the following related classes and exams: AP Chinese exam, I received a 5, and Advanced Chinese II, I received an A.
Having gone through the college application process myself, I can help students seeking undergraduate admission to colleges and universities. I can suggest schools that would be a good fit, as well as help craft personal statements and appeal letters.
I have helped students gain admission to University of Southern California (USC), University of Maryland- College Park, and Bryn Mawr College.
I have taught various math, reading, writing, and science lessons within Montgomery County Public Schools. I was also a teacher's assistant at a Christian Montessori school in Germany (grades K-4, mixed). In the past, I have tutored with Aristotle Circle (formerly Peer2Peer Tutors) and the Chinese American Parents and Students Association (CAPSA).
In this technological age, computer literacy is indispensable. I have helped multiple students (both adults and children) learn how to get the most out of this powerful robot! Covered topics include: Windows, keyboarding basics, internet (social networking, email, etc.) and more. If you are looking for both information and application, I can help!
I taught handwriting to young children (K/1st) at a Montessori school in Germany. My approach to teaching handwriting is very systematic--I teach letters in a certain order and use the "House" method. I also teach students how to angle their paper and properly grasp their pencil. These methods apply to both print and cursive.
I have been using Publisher for more than 5 years to create brochures, newsletters, and magazine layouts.
Word is so much more than a blank page where you can put text and images. If you are looking to get the full capabilities out of this program, you have come to the right person. I have taught both adults and children to use Microsoft products with success for 3 years.
Reading is one of the most important "building block" skills necessary for success in our society today. I teach a mix of phonics, phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, vocabulary expansion, and fluency. Currently, I am a Literacy TA at Asian American Lead in Washington, D.C.
I am passionate about helping children with special needs reach their highest potential. I have taught students with visual impairments, ADD/ADHD, and autism. During the school year, I volunteer with at-risk children from the Edgehill Methodist Church, where many of these children have high incidence disabilities. Some methods I use include Direct Instruction and Applied Behavioral Analysis.
I am also familiar with the process of acquiring accommodations (IEP/504) for school and testing (College Board/American College Testing) purposes.
I have written educational blog content for Aristotle Circle and was a regular contributor to the school newspaper. In my free time, I write poetry and children's books.
