I first started reading when my father grew tired of reading Winnie the Pooh (again). I decided to sound it out myself that night! Today, I am a professional writer, researcher and analyst who loves to share my enthusiasm for the written word with students. I encourage students to express themselves through their writing and better understand their world through reading. I use remediation, coaching, homework help or anything else that may fit your child's reading and writing needs.

Over the past five years, I have worked with college students as a tutor and teacher of various political science and international studies courses. My experience working with students at the college-level is easily translated to advanced high school students. When tutoring student on social science subjects, my background allows me to focus on writing skills as well as comprehension, substance and context. I'm also happy to do any preparation necessary to be an effective tutor on subjects outside of my expertise.

My father was a history professor at a small college in South Carolina and, as a child, I spent many summers reading books in his office or in the university library. During the school year, I performed in plays and competed in public speaking and essay competitions. I enjoy all kinds of fiction and non-fiction and I'm confident I could help a student write well on a number of topics.

My goal as a tutor is to create a positive environment where I can motivate students to engage in both analytical and critical thinking, thus improving their reading comprehension and writing skills. I believe a strong reader can more easily become a strong writer. I prefer to work with students 1-on-1 and in small group settings which allows students to ask questions without feeling intimidated or worrying about the pace of the class. A small writing group can also provide encouragement and feedback to fledgling writers.

I truly believe that my students' success is my success. I invest in each and every one of my students and try to be flexible, accommodating and available. My goal is for each of my students to not only feel successful but BE successful.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Political Science

I have an MA and PhD in International Studies and Political Science, as well as a BA in Political Science. I co-taught 6 undergraduate classes in Political Science, including Intro to Political Science. I have also tutored college students in the subject, often using a mix of textbooks, contemporary authors and current events.

Study Skills

In graduate school, I assisted 6 student-athletes with their study skills by creating study plans, calendars, and deadlines as well as reviewing their techniques to study, retain and recall information. Personally, I completed an MA and PhD in 5 years by creating a short- and long-term plan, which included mechanisms for accountability. I'm confident I can create a tailored plan for a student to complete their work efficiently and with care as well as refine their study skills to do so.
