Greetings! If you find yourself in need of help with digital drawing and other graphic design software (AutoCAD, PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign, SketchUp), writing of the creative or formal type, and/or would like personal attention in athletic endeavors (especially soccer, kung fu and running/general fitness), I would be happy to help you reach your goals.
The things on the list above may seem random, but a bit about my training and background will illuminate this seemingly disparate list of endeavors. First, I have an undergraduate degree in English (2004), with a concentration in creative writing. My senior writing project was in poetry writing. I love words, reading, writing and recommending books to people. I can help with style, flow, editing and diction. I recently completed (2013) a master of landscape architecture (MLA) degree at the University of Maryland. In landscape architecture, we are trained in hand and digital drawing (hence the AutoCAD, PhotoShop, etc). I was a TA for an AutoCAD and GIS course and used the Adobe Creative Suite programs for nearly every project during grad school. For my MLA degree, I completed a year-long thesis project which involved writing a 180-page thesis paper documenting my design process and the proposed design in writing and graphics. I am passionate about designing great places for people and am also a plant nerd. Not many students will need assistance with horticulture, but if you happen to have a plant ID course, I love botanical Latin and would happily nerd out helping you learn more about plants... Finally, I am a life-long athlete. I have competitively participated in: soccer for 13 years, rugby for four years, cross country for three years and wrestling for two years (yes, wrestling). I have recreationally participated in squash and tennis for about 10 years each. I currently train as an advanced student in Jow Ga kung fu, which I have been doing for over eight years. Additionally, I run and bicycle for fun and fitness. My major expertise is in kung fu and soccer, but I am happy to advise regarding running and general fitness, and certainly if you are interested in the other activities I mentioned, please ask about my experience in detail so we can determine how I can best assist you.
My approach to tutoring is simple: to find out from you what your needs and learning preferences are, and then to determine an effective way for you to meet your goals. I believe that learning is collaborative and feedback is important. My goal in tutoring is not to help you digest information, but to help you learn how to learn--how to navigate whatever field of inquiry or activity you are pursuing. No one knows everything, and I will surely learn from you too! In this way, you can move forward both with increased knowledge and the confidence to continue your work when you no longer need a tutor.
A bit of house-keeping: in terms of cancellation policy, I require notice of lesson cancellation at least 24 hours in advance. The cancellation fee is half of the hourly rate.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Good luck in your studies, and go get 'em!
