I am a history and special education teacher at a school for students with learning differences and ADHD in the Washington, DC area. I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Rochester. I also have a Master's degree in Social Studies and Special Education from the University of Rochester. I have experience teaching students with many different challenges and disabilities (Autism, Asperger's, ADHD, dyslexia, ODD, ED, and ADD). I have experience teaching this population of students at the elementary, middle, and high school level. I am very familiar with IEPs and using IEP goals to drive my teaching instruction to target students' specific needs. I also have experience writing IEP goals and accommodations for my students. I have experience teaching reading, phonics, writing, and elementary math to special education populations.
In addition to my experience with special education, I am also experienced in regular and gifted education. I am very familiar with the AP history exams, and received 5's on them when I took them myself in high school. I currently hold teaching certifications in both special education and history. I am a certified special education teacher and currently teach at a school that exclusively serves a special education population. The vast majority of my students have dyslexia, and I have extensive experience in implementing teaching strategies for students with dyslexia. For my students with dyslexia I use a wide range of strategies in the classroom, including: "chunking" the information that is presented, planning plenty of time to review and practice, presenting information orally and visually, using technology as necessary, scaffolding reading instruction, and providing one to one support as often as possible.

I have extensive experience implementing remedial reading comprehension strategies and am familiar with various phonemic awareness programs such as Wilson Foundations and Lexia. I use a variety of different strategies for teaching phonemic awareness, such as repetition and opportunities to practice hearing and recognizing common blends, diagraphs, and vowels. I can also provide explicit instruction in learning to recognize and know the meaning of common prefixes and suffixes.
