I am a skilled tutor who has worked as a professional writer and a teacher's assistant for freshman college courses. I possess a master's degree from a top-10 school of international relations (3.87 GPA) and a bachelor's in politics from a liberal arts college that was ranked #18 in best undergraduate education by U.S. News and World Report in 2013 (3.75 GPA, summa cum laude). I also have extensive experience coaching adults on professional, persuasive writing in the nonprofit sector. In 2010-2011 I lived in South America, where I developed Spanish fluency.
My greatest strength is in helping students to improve their writing skills. My subject matter knowledge is particularly strong in the areas of government/politics (including international relations), Spanish and English. I am also strong in the area of test preparation (particularly SAT Verbal and GED).
MY TUTORING STYLE AND POLICIES
I am happy to tailor the tutoring experience to meet individual needs. I work together with students to create a plan for tutoring that may involve outside reading and "homework" assignments - if appropriate - to reinforce material covered in lessons.
Cancellation - My general cancellation policy is to charge half my hourly rate for sessions that are cancelled less than 12 hours before the scheduled meeting time. However, I will charge my FULL RATE if I am notified of a cancellation LESS THAN 90 MINUTES before a lesson. If a student has three or more last-minute cancellations within a 6-month period, I may charge the full rate for additional missed sessions. Exceptions to this policy may be made on a case by case basis for certain circumstances beyond the student's control.
Discounts - I offer discounts for group lessons. Please ask if interested in negotiating.
Last Minute Tutoring - I am happy to do last minute test preparation in Spanish. I am open to last minute preparation for tests in other subjects only if students have a particular topic area in mind with which they have particular problems. I will provide last minute assistance with paper writing on a case by case basis, preferring that students have completed a first draft if within 24 hours of the due date, and an outline if within two days (research papers and papers over 12 pages require more advance time).
