I have a degree in Special Education from the University of the District of Columbia and have student-taught on the middle school and elementary levels. I have tutored middle-school-aged students in English, Math, Reading (Success for All) and music. I have used various methods to teach English and Reading including teaching phonics; teaching recognition of endings, prefixes, suffixes, compound words; teaching blends, digraphs, and diphthongs; teaching using context clues to understand unfamiliar words; grammar; and spelling. In math, I have tutored word-problem solving and writing; strategies for quick computation, algebra, pre-algebra, geometry, algebra 2 and calculus. I have also tutored in music: instrumental instruction on the oboe, flute or recorder using the Elementary Band Method Book, or for more advanced students, the Gekler book for oboe, with an emphasis on music theory for any instrument. I have taught oboe students to play world-class music, from solos to concertos. I have also taught basic French and Spanish to elementary students.
I am an advanced oboist and English writer. I have written a thesis of 40 pages and received the highest awards in English at the Washington International School where I attended high school. I attended the Aspen Music Festival on scholarship. I have a high aptitude for mathematics. I have, in addition, tutored adults to pass a GED high school equivalency test, to pass the Praxis I & II tests for teacher licensure, and to take the SAT in English and Math.
